The term refers to not only opposition to Turks across all regions, but also opposition to the subjects of the Ottoman Empire, as well as the descendants of ethnic Turks, such as the Syrian Turkmen and the Iraqi Turkmen. It is also applied to groups who developed in part under the influence of the Turkish culture and traditions while converting to Islam, especially during the time of the Ottoman Empire, such as the Albanians, the Bosniaks and other smaller ethnic groups around the Balkans.
