Carl Gustaf Armfelt the Younger

Carl Gustaf Armfelt (July 14, 1724 - January 5, 1792, Malmö, Sweden) was a Finnish baron and major general.[1]

Family

His father was baron Gustaf Armfelt and mother Anna Elisabet Wrangel. His grandfather was general and baron Carl Gustaf Armfelt the Elder.[2]

He was married first, in 1755, to Antoinetta Johanna Morman, who was born on May 8, 1732, at Gedsholm and died December 22, 1762, at Laxpojo. He married second, on December 26, 1766, at Hofdala parish in Kristianstad County, Anna Margareta Ehrenborg, born November 21, 1729, died September 5, 1789, in Hälsingborg, daughter of cavalry captain Casper Ehrenborg and Elisabet Eufrosyne von Conowen.[1]

Career

He became a corporal in the Nyland Dragoon Regiment in 1735 and was promoted to non-commissioned officer in the same regiment in 1738. On August 19, 1742, he became an ensign. In 1745, he served as a captain in French service. On January 31, 1749, he was appointed lieutenant in the Nyland Infantry Regiment, and on September 6, 1750, became regimental quartermaster in the same regiment. He was promoted to captain on September 27, 1753. He became a Knight of the Order of the Sword on November 23, 1761.[1] On March 18, 1768, he was promoted to second major, and on August 28, 1771, to first major. He became a lieutenant colonel in the army on June 22, 1775, and lieutenant colonel in the regiment on April 11, 1776. On June 22, 1776, he was made deputy governor of Nyland and Tavastehus counties. He became a colonel in the army on June 6, 1777, and colonel of the Nyland Infantry Regiment on November 13, 1780. He was created Commander of the Order of the Sword on November 27, 1786.[1]

On June 30, 1787, he became governor of Nyland and Tavastehus counties, and was promoted to major general on July 30, 1787. In 1788, he was commander of the southern corps at the Russian border, and on July 13, 1788, became King Gustav III of Sweden's first adjutant general. He resigned his command on August 7, 1788. On January 7, 1789, he was arrested and on April 19, 1790, was sentenced for his involvement in the Anjala conspiracy to lose his life, honor, and property, and to be beheaded; however, the king commuted the sentence on August 13, 1790, to life imprisonment in a fortress. In 1790 he was declared to have lost his orders of knighthood. He died on January 5, 1792, at Malmö fortress and was buried at Brönnestad Church in Kristianstad County.[1]
