Car lift
Appearance
Car lift may refer to:
- Car elevator, a device which transports cars between different floors of a building.
- Car lift, car hydraulic lift, 2 post lift or 2 column lift, a device which mechanically lifts a car up, so that the mechanic can work underneath.
- Car ramp, a device which raises a car from the ground for access to its undercarriage.
There are several types of car lift, including:
- 2 post car lifts: Two-post lifts are a common type of automotive lift, known for their versatility and relatively compact footprint. They lift the vehicle by two arms that contact the vehicle's designated lifting points, typically located along the vehicle's frame rails. Two-post lifts offer unobstructed access to the underside of the vehicle, making them suitable for a wide range of maintenance and repair tasks. They are available in various capacities to accommodate different vehicle weights. However, proper positioning of the lift arms is crucial to ensure vehicle stability and prevent damage. Incorrect placement can lead to the vehicle tipping or falling. Safety mechanisms, such as arm locks and automatic shut-offs, are essential features of modern two-post lifts. They are commonly found in professional automotive garages and repair shops and are also popular among home mechanics with sufficient space.
- 4 post car lifts: Four-post lifts provide greater stability compared to two-post lifts, as the vehicle rests on two solid platforms. This design makes them well-suited for heavier vehicles and tasks that require more stability, such as wheel alignments. Four-post lifts are often used for vehicle storage as well as maintenance. They are generally easier and safer to drive onto than over an inspection pit, reducing the risk of damaging the vehicle. However, they offer less unobstructed access to the underside of the vehicle compared to two-post lifts. Like two-post lifts, four-post lifts come in various capacities and configurations, and 4 post lifts are the recommended type of car lift for MOT Bays.
- Car scissor lifts: Scissor lifts utilise a hydraulic or electro-mechanical scissor-like mechanism to raise the vehicle. Some are portable, and some fix to the ground, and they tend to have a lower profile when collapsed than either 2 post or 4 post lifts, making them suitable for use in spaces with limited ceiling height, as well as use for low-profile cars. Scissor lifts are commonly used for quick service tasks, such as tyre changes and brake work. They offer good access to the sides of the vehicle but may provide less access to the center underside. Scissor lifts can be either full-rise or mid-rise, depending on the maximum lifting height. They are a popular choice for both professional garages and DIY enthusiasts.
