CaptionHub is a British software company that develops a cloud-based platform for subtitling, transcription, translation, and synthetic voiceover.[1][2] Founded in 2015, the platform combines automatic speech recognition and machine translation with human editing workflows. It supports localisation in over 400 languages and offers synthetic voiceover in 78 languages.

History

CaptionHub originated in 2015 from a subtitling prototype developed at Neon, a visual effects studio based in London.[3] Tom Bridges launched the company as a standalone software-as-a-service platform later that year.

The platform added speech recognition, subtitle editing, and integrations with services including Speechmatics,[4] Brightcove[5][6] Amazon Web Services,[7][8][9][10] Phrase,[11][12] and Lilt.[13] By 2019, it supported multilingual transcription, waveform visualisation, and standard subtitle formats.

In 2020, CaptionHub provided translated captions for the virtual NAB Show Express.[14][8][15] TED adopted the platform for subtitling and translation of TED, TEDx, and TED-Ed content.[16][17]

In 2023, the company launched CaptionHub Live, a real-time subtitling service.[18][19][20][21] In 2024, CaptionHub added synthetic voiceover, adaptive bitrate streaming,[15] and integrated Lilt’s Contextual AI.[13][22][23] It added integrations with Smartling[24] and RWS.[25][26]

Features

CaptionHub provides automated and manual subtitling through a browser-based interface. It includes tools for speech recognition, machine translation, editing, review, version control, and export in formats such as SRT and VTT. It also supports synthetic voiceover and integrates with platforms including YouTube, and Vimeo.[27] Other features include speech model training and terminology management.

The platform integrates with services such as Amazon Polly, ElevenLabs,[28] and JW Player.[29]

Products

CaptionHub Automation, introduced in 2023, enables high-volume subtitling through a no-code interface. CaptionHub Live generates low-latency subtitles for live broadcasts.[18][8][20][21] In 2024, the company released CaptionHub Connect for vendor collaboration[30] and CaptionHub Voiceover, a text-to-speech tool supporting over 70 languages and speaker differentiation.[31][32][28]

Recognition

In 2024, CaptionHub received the Process Innovation Challenge (PIC) Innovator of the Year – Europe Award at LocWorld 51 for its live subtitling platform.[33][34][35]
