Cafezal do Sul is a municipality in the state of Paraná in the Southern Region of Brazil.[2]
Geography
[edit]Cafezal do Sul is located in the northwestern part of Paraná, bordering the municipalities of Umuarama, Iporã, and Alto Piquiri. It lies at an altitude of approximately 390 meters above sea level and has a predominantly flat topography, making it suitable for agriculture.[3]
Demographics
[edit]As of the 2022 census, the municipality had an estimated population of 4,010 people.[4] The population density is relatively low, and the majority of the inhabitants reside in rural areas, primarily working in agriculture and related activities.[4]
History
[edit]Cafezal do Sul was officially created as a municipality on December 14, 1964, through State Law No. 4.788, separating it from the municipality of Umuarama.[5] The name "Cafezal" comes from the Portuguese word for coffee plantation, reflecting the region's past association with large-scale coffee farming during the mid-20th century.[3]
Economy
[edit]The economy of Cafezal do Sul is largely based on agriculture, including the cultivation of soybeans, corn, and wheat. Livestock farming, especially cattle and poultry, also plays a vital role in the local economy.[6] According to the IBGE, the municipality recorded a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of approximately R$ 61 million in 2021.[7]
Human Development Index
[edit]According to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Cafezal do Sul had a Municipal Human Development Index (MHDI) of 0.764 in 2010, placing it in the "high" development category.[8]
Education and Health
[edit]The municipality operates public schools at the primary and secondary levels, overseen by both municipal and state education departments.[9] In terms of healthcare, Cafezal do Sul has basic health units and outpatient services, with more advanced care available in neighboring cities.[10]
Transport
[edit]The municipality is accessible via the PR-323 highway, which connects Cafezal do Sul to other major cities and municipalities in the region. Rural roads and local transport infrastructure support agricultural logistics and community mobility.[11]
