Early life and education
[edit]Madduma Bandara spent his early childhood in Konwewa, a rural village in the Anuradhapura District. After passing the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination, he was admitted to Anuradhapura Central College, where he studied under the first principal of the school’s newly established premises, E. R. Erathna.[1] He was a boarder at the school’s hostel and studied in the English medium, which was the only medium of instruction at the time. He remained at the college until completing his Ordinary Level examinations.
In 1959, Madduma Bandara was one of nine students from Anuradhapura Central College to gain admission to the University of Peradeniya, where he began his undergraduate studies.[1].
He earned a doctorate (PhD) in environmental geography from the University of Cambridge.[2]
Academic career
[edit]Madduma Bandara joined the Department of Geography at the University of Peradeniya and became Professor of Environmental Geography. His research focuses on village tank cascade systems, groundwater management, watershed ecology, and water demand in Sri Lanka and southern India.[3][4] After retirement, he became Professor Emeritus at the Rajarata University of Sri Lanka.[5]
Vice-chancellorship
[edit]In 1994, he was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya, succeeding Prof. J. M. Gunadasa. He held the position until 1997, when Prof. Leslie Gunawardana took over.[6]
Honours and contributions
[edit]In August 2022, Madduma Bandara was awarded a Doctor of Letters (honoris causa) by the University of Peradeniya.[7] He has donated scholarly books, journals, and cultural artifacts to the university library and continues to contribute to academic workshops and environmental discussions.[8][9]
