Burundi–Pakistan relations refer to the diplomatic and economic ties between the Republic of Burundi and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. The two countries established diplomatic relations on 9 March 2005.[1][2] Pakistan does not have a resident embassy in Burundi;[3] instead, its High Commission in Nairobi, Kenya,[4] manages relations with Burundi. Burundi handles its relations with Pakistan through its embassies in Beijing and New Delhi.
In 2014, Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza visited Pakistan. Most interactions between the two countries take place at international platforms, such as the United Nations and the Non-Aligned Movement, where both countries are members.[5]
Trade
[edit]In terms of trade, Pakistan exported about 4.16 million USD worth of goods to Burundi in 2022. These included used clothing, pharmaceutical products, and medical instruments. In the same year, Burundi exported around 13.1 million USD to Pakistan, mostly tea.[6][7] In 2023, Pakistan's main exports to Burundi were medical instruments (39,500 USD), packaged medicines (26,700 USD), and transmissions (4,560 USD).[8] Burundi’s exports to Pakistan were valued at about 2.97 million USD, mainly tea.[9] There are no trade or investment agreements between the two countries, and trade is done under general World Trade Organization (WTO) rules.[10]
In 2004, more than 1,100 Pakistani troops were sent to Burundi as part of the United Nations Operation in Burundi (ONUB) to help maintain peace after a period of civil unrest.[11][12][13]
