Balša Popović (Serbian Cyrillic: Балша Поповић; born 10 June 2000) is a Montenegrin professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for OFK Beograd and the Montenegro national team.[2]
Club career
[edit]Popović began his professional career with Grbalj , with whom he signed a professional contract in early 2018.[3][4] In the second half of the same calendar year, he was loaned to Arsenal Tivat on dual registration.[5] He was under contract with Grbalj until 2021, after which he left the club. [6][7][8] He was on trial with Partizan during September of the same year.[9] A few months later, he joined the Kolubara, where he mainly played the role of reserve to Dejan Stanivuković in the following period.[10][11][12] He made his debut in the Serbian SuperLiga in an away match against Red Star Belgrade in the 28th round of the 2021–22 competition.[13][14] In early August 2023, he moved to OFK Beograd.[15][16] During the winter break of the 2023–24 season, he was training with Red Star Belgrade but he don't sign a contract with them because of his past behavior where he sings a songs for Red Star Belgrade eternal rival Partizan and that is the reason why he don't sign a contract with Red Star Belgrade And he back to OFK Beograd.[17] At the end of the season, Popović won the Serbian First League with OFK Beograd and contributed to their promotion to the higher tier of the competition. [18] The following season, he played in all 37 matches in the Serbian SuperLiga.[19] Popović signed a three-year contract with Red Star Belgrade in the summer of 2025, but remained at OFK Beograd on loan.[20][21]
International career
[edit]He has played for all the junior national teams of Montenegro, from cadets to Montenegro U21 national team.[22] In September 2024, he was called up by the senior team coach of that country, Robert Prosinečki, for matches in the 2024–25 UEFA Nations League for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification. [23] At the beginning of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification – UEFA Group L in March 2025, Prosinečki announced that Igor Nikić and Balša Popović would share the minutes in front of goal during that period.[24] Thus, Popović made his debut in a victory over the Faroe Islands national team, with a minimal result of 1:0.[25]
Private
[edit]Balša's brother, Stefan Popović, is also a football goalkeeper.[10][26][27]
