Ayman Siam (Arabic: أيمن سيام; died November 2023) was a senior Hamas commander in the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades.[1] He was reportedly in charge of the group's rocket and artillery units and played a leading role in the coordination and execution of rocket attacks against Israel.[2]

Military career

[edit]

Siam served as the head of Hamas’s rocket-firing array and artillery forces in northern Gaza. He was instrumental in organizing and supervising the launch of rockets during multiple conflicts with Israel. He had previously survived several targeted assassination attempts by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), including during the 2008–09 Gaza War and 2014 Gaza War.[3]

Contested reports of death

[edit]

In 2014, Israeli media reported that Siam had been killed in an airstrike during the conflict in Gaza. However, Hamas denied the claim and stated that he was still alive.[4]

Death

[edit]

In November 2023, Hamas confirmed Siam’s death in an Israeli airstrike in northern Gaza.[2] The strike targeted underground Hamas infrastructure and reportedly also killed other senior commanders, including Ahmed Ghandour.[5]

Legacy

[edit]

Siam was considered one of Hamas’s most experienced commanders in charge of its rocket program. His work in developing and overseeing Hamas’s artillery capabilities made him a key figure in the group’s military structure. His death was regarded as a significant loss to Hamas’s leadership during the 2023 Israel–Hamas war.[3]
