The axolotl (/ˈæksəlɒtəl/) is a critically endangered neotenic salamander that is native to Lake Xochimilco and Lake Chalco in central Mexico. The axolotl's possesses the ability to regenerate complex tissues, which has made it a key model organism in regenerative biology.
