Atre Bezabeh (born 12 June 1954) is an Ethiopian middle-distance runner. He was described as having "shown signs of becoming a force in the world" over 800 metres in 1981. He competed in the men's 800 metres and 4 × 400 metres relay at the 1980 Summer Olympics.[1]

Career

[edit]

Bezabeh was seeded in the 5th 800 m heat at the 1980 Olympics.[2] He ran 1:52.7 to place 5th and did not advance.[3] In the relay, he anchored the Ethiopian team to a 3:18.2-minute finish for 7th in their heat.[2]

In 1981, Bezabeh set a personal best of 47.6 over 400 m.[4]

On 30 May 1981, Bezabeh was nominated by the Ethiopian Athletics Federation to run against Olympic champion Sebastian Coe over 800 m along with two other runners.[5][6] He did not win the race, described as being left in Coe's wake.[7]

On 24 May 1981, Bezabeh ran 800 metres in 1 minute and 47 seconds. The performance was thought to be more impressive because it was done at 8,000 feet (2,400 m) of altitude.[8]

In the lead-up to the June 1981 Phillips Night of Athletics meeting in Crystal Palace, London, Bezabeh was said to "have recently shown signs of becoming a force in the world" over 800 m.[9][10] He was described as Coe's "main opposition" in the race.[8]
