Arundhati Singha John (née Arundhati Baruah Singha) is an Indian classical dancer who specializes in Bharatanatyam, Yoga and Kalaripayattu.
Early Life & Education
[edit]Arundhati Singha was born into an Assamese - Manipuri family.
Singha began dancing at the age of four. After moving to Chennai in 1993, she pursued formal training at Besant Arundale School, Chennai. She completed her post-graduation from Rukmini Devi College of Fine Arts (Kalakshetra Foundation), specializing in Bharatanatyam.[1]
Singha joined the Kalakshetra Foundation in 1999 as a full-time resident student for advanced training, and was awarded the ICCR Scholarship by the Government of India in 2004.[2] She then studied at the Roshan Taneja School of Acting in Mumbai.[citation needed]
Career
[edit]Post-Kalakshetra, Dr. Singha worked at Darpana Academy under the Late Smt. Mrinalini Sarabhai and Smt. Mallika Sarabhai. Under Smt. Mallika’s mentorship, she refined her abhinaya, enriching her Bharatanatyam with mythological and poetic depth. Darpana’s innovative environment, blending classical dance with contemporary theatre,[3] martial arts, and social activism, shaped her ability to deliver nuanced, expressive performances[4].
After marriage, Dr. Singha relocated to Kuwait, assuming the role of Artistic Director at Nritta Dhyana,[5] a 36-year-old institution founded by Smt. Sujatha Rajendran.[6] She currently leads the academy’s operations in Kuwait and India, continuing to advance the legacy of Indian classical arts.[7]
Recognition
[edit]She has been recognized and awarded by country ambassadors, diplomats and Sheikhs in Kuwait for her contribution to Indian performing arts and cultural diplomacy.[8] Her productions have been visited by diplomats, cultural leaders, and Indian community heads as chief guests.[9]
