Antakarana is a northern dialect of Malagasy spoken by Antakarana people in the province of Antsiranana.[1][2]

Classification

[edit]

Antakarana is a northern dialect of the Malagasy language, which belongs to the Austronesian family. It is closely related to Northern Sakalava, Bushi, Northern Betsimisaraka, and Tsimihety dialects.[3]

Geographic distribution

[edit]

Antakarana is the popular dialect in the regions of Diana and to a lesser extent Sava and Sofia.

Characteristics

[edit]

The prolonged French presence in Antsiranana province has led speakers of the Antakarana dialect to incorporate French vocabulary into their language, resulting in a blend of native and French linguistic elements.
