Alex Kihurani

Alexander Gakuu Kihurani (born January 10, 1987) is an American–Kenyan rally co-driver based in London, England. He has competed internationally in the World Rally Championship (WRC), European Rally Championship (ERC), and national championships across multiple countries.

Early life and education

Kihurani was born in the United States to a father from Karatina, Kenya. He became interested in rallying from an early age. He attended Pennsylvania State University, earning degrees in Information Sciences and Economics.[1]

Kihurani participated in his first time-speed-distance (TSD) rally at age 12 and made his stage rally debut at 16. In 2005, he won the Rally America G2 National Championship. In 2008, he co-drove with Dave Mirra, earning a bronze medal at X Games 14.[1]

International competition

He has competed in over 200 events in more than 20 countries across North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. [2] In 2013, Kihurani moved to London to pursue rallying opportunities in Europe and the World Rally Championship.[1]

World Rally Championship and beyond

Kihurani made his WRC debut in Finland in 2012 and has co-driven in WRC-2 and WRC-3 for drivers including Sean_Johnston_(rally_driver) and Chris_Ingram_(rally_driver). He competed with Ingram in the British Rally Championship and various WRC events.[3]

In July 2023, he co-drove for Kenyan driver Hamza Anwar in Rally Estonia in the Junior WRC, achieving a fifth-place finish.[4]

Personal life

Kihurani became a father in 2023 when his daughter was born prematurely. He has publicly discussed challenges with mental health and grief following personal losses, including the passing of his father in a racing accident in August 2023.[5] Kihurani was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease and leukemia in 2015 but has continued his rally career despite health setbacks.[6]
