Abdul Karim Ahmad (12 July 1937 – 11 February 2021) was an Indonesian ulama and politician. He served as a member of the House of Representatives in Riau until 1971 and is known as one of the founders of Darul Mukmin Foundation in Karimun Regency.

Early life and education

Ahmad was born on 12 July 1937 in Bengkalis, Central Sumatra, as the eldest child and son of the five children of Tuan Guru Haji Ahmad (1885–1949), an ulama who is known as the first person to established an Islamic education institution in Bengkalis, and Khadijah binti Sulaiman, a woman from Bengkalis.[1][2] His brothers including A. Hamid Ahmad (1944–2021), a politician, Hasan Ahmad, and Ahmad Idris. Ahmad also has 15 half-siblings which included Mariah binti Ahmad (died 1955), a homemaker who was the wife of Zakaria bin Muhammad Amin, from his father first marriage to Rohimah binti Sani.[2]

In 1953, Ahmad moved to Tanjungpinang and then went to PGAN for six years.[1][2] After graduated, he continued his college education in Yogyakarta majoring in mualimin in 1962, and returned to Tanjungpinang after graduated.[1][2]

Personal life and death

Ahmad was married and has had four sons and a daughter.[3][2] He died at his residence in Tanjungpinang, Riau Islands, on 11 February 2021 at 05:00 AM due to illness and old age at the age of 83, and was buried at Pohon Lanjut Cemetery on the same day.[1][4][3][2]

Career

Ahmad started his career by working at Religious Court of Riau Island Regency.[1][2] He then served as a member of the House of Representatives in Riau from Nahdlatul Ulama party until 1971 and then returned to work at Religious Court of Riau Island until retired.[1][2] Ahmad then served as the head of Religious Court of Riau Island until retired in 1999.[1][2] He later served as the head of Indonesian Ulema Council in Riau Islands from 1999 until 2004 and served as chairman of the Syuro Council of the National Awakening Party from 1999 until 2005.[1][2] Ahmad then served as the chairman I of the Indonesian Ulema Council in Riau Islands from 2004 until 2013 and served as chairman of the Mustasyar Nahdlatul Ulama of Riau Islands from 2004 until 2021.[1][2] He also served as chairman of the Syuro Council of the National Awakening Party of Ulama in Riau Islands from 2006 until 2010 and served as the general chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council in Riau Islands from 2013 until 2021.[1][2]

Ahmad was one of the founder of Darul Mukmin Foundation, a foundation that pioneered integrated Islamic concept schools in Karimun Regency.[1][2]
