A preliminary discussion of literary reform
Towards literary reform (also translated as A preliminary discussion of literary reform[1] etc.) is an article published by Hu Shih on 1 January 1917 in the Chinese journal La Jeunesse volume 2, issue 5. Hu was a graduate student at Columbia University at the time, and the editor of the journal was Chen Duxiu.
Hu proposed 8 theses to reform Chinese literature:[2]
- The writing must be concrete.
- Don’t imitate ancient writers.
- Respect grammar.[3]
- Don’t moan without cause.
- Get rid of clichés.
- Avoid literary references.
- Symmetry is not mandatory.
- No need to avoid colloquialism.
