The 2026 Ethiopian general election is expected to be scheduled in June 2026.

Background

[edit]

The election is the first six round election to spontaneously change its term length in federal Ethiopia, the previous elections held five round since 1995. After the 2021 election, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed proposed major constitutional amendment such as transitioning parliamentary system to presidential that allow him to stay in power until 2037. Ethio forum, a local media, debunked that Abiy reportedly to use the National Dialogue Commission for the purpose of delaying the election for the sake of constitutional amendment.[1]

Bizuneh Yimenu, a lecturer in Comparative Politics at Queen's University Belfast wrote that the same "electoral control" existed before. For example, the EPRDF ruling party have secured 95% seats in the House of Peoples' Representatives with exception of the 2005 election, in which the opposition won about 32%. Nevertheless, the opposition leaders faced arbitrary detention and suppression from participating.[2]
