[edit]- March 17 — Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev declared his government's decision to freeze the deployment of medium range nuclear armaments in the European part of USSR.
- March 24 — A speech was delivered by Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev in Tashkent to normalize Sino-Soviet relations.[1]
- May 24 — Yuri Andropov, the chairman of the KGB is appointed to the Secretariat of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.
- September 21 — Joint Soviet-Indian Declaration.[2]
- November 10 — Leonid Brezhnev, who lead the Soviet Union for 18 years, dies at 75.[3]
- November 12 — Yuri Andropov was elected as General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.[4]
- November 15 — The State Funeral of Leonid Brezhnev was held and he was buried at the Kremlin Wall Necropolis.[5][6]
