A gubernatorial election was held in Virginia on November 7, 1786. The attorney general of Virginia Edmund Randolph was elected.[1]
The incumbent governor Patrick Henry declined to seek re-election.[2] Randolph was known to be a supporter of the Annapolis Convention and was considered a likely candidate to succeed Henry when the Virginia General Assembly met in October. Although Randolph himself was ambivalent about the promotion, the Assembly met in joint session and elected Randolph ahead of the constitutional start of the new term on December 1.[3]
