Yaakov Shapiro is an American Orthodox rabbi, author, and public lecturer known for his outspoken opposition to Zionism. He argues that Judaism is a religion and not a nationality, and has delivered numerous lectures and interviews explaining why, in his view, Zionism represents a political ideology incompatible with traditional Jewish beliefs.[1][unreliable source]

Views and activities

[edit]

Shapiro has become widely known through public lectures and independent media appearances. He maintains that the Zionist movement redefined Jewish identity from a religious community into a nationalist project, which he argues is a distortion of traditional Judaism.[2][unreliable source]

In a 2025 interview on the podcast *For the Sake of Argument*, Shapiro discussed the historical and philosophical divergence between Judaism and Zionism, stating that the idea of Jewish nationality is incompatible with Torah principles.[3]

His arguments have been widely circulated and debated online.[citation needed]
