A couple thousand articles are showing "invalid designation" and I don't know what has changed

[edit]

Please see this talk page thread, where I'm talking to myself about a couple thousand articles that are showing "invalid designation" when, from everything I can find, they were not doing so a month ago or for the last few years. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:40, 3 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Merger discussion

[edit]

I've opened a merge discussion involving St. Charles Battle Site at Talk:Battle of St. Charles#Merging in St. Charles Battle Site. I think there also ought to be a more general discussion for whether NRHP battlefield sites that have no substantive history outside of the battle warrant a separate article from the battle. I'm thinking stubs like the St. Charles one or Big Black River Battlefield where the battlefield has no non-nomative postbattle use, not the ones with developed parks of course. As a disclosure this would affect two GAs I have that were expanded from redirects First Battle of Newtonia Historic District and Second Battle of Newtonia Site; I've questioned my judgment in creating those for several years but have never had the nerve to start proposing mergers of NRHP sites. @Hog Farm: I have responded regarding the St. Charles site at the merge discussion. As a response to your more general question, I generally agree with you that sites with no real history outside of battles don't warrant their own article. This WikiProject's style guide says, An NRHP district does not always require its own article as there may be a high degree of overlap with present-day communities, and while that addresses historic districts and modern neighborhoods specifically, I think the sentiment can be extended to historic battlefields and their prior or subsequent use. As to your two GAs, however, it appears to me as if there is sufficient material in the historic site articles regarding the locations as historic areas (as opposed to simply being a re-hashing of the battles) to warrant their existence as separate articles. Personally, I would trim a little from the 'Preservation' sections of the battle articles themselves as they already point to the main historic site articles where that info exists. Otherwise, I think your judgment in creating the NRHP articles was sound. DrOrinScrivello (talk) 19:19, 15 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Green Spring Farm Plantation House; Alexandria or Annandale?

[edit]

I just split off the gallery for the historic plantation house at the Green Spring Gardens Park which is said to be in Alexandria, Virginia, However, I've become confused. The HABS related images claim it's in Annandale, Virginia, and not only did I have to combined NRHP categories from both Fairfax County and Alexandria, but I even added a separate category for "Green Springs Garden Park." What's the deal here? ---------User:DanTD (talk) 13:07, 31 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I would take the addressing information in older HABS surveys with large grains of salt; I've seen instances that were noticeably off, even in areas with relatively stable municipal boundaries. Magic♪piano 00:29, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Seems reasonable enough. There's still also the issue of the "Green Spring Gardens Park" and the "Green Springs Garden Park" categories. So, I take it this might require a merger? ---------User:DanTD (talk) 05:17, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
