Emblem of the United Nations WikiProject United Nations aims to facilitate cooperation between the United Nations, other Intergovernmental Organizations (IGOs) and the Wikimedia movement. These pages provide a guide on what work can be done with simple guides on how to contribute so that everyone can take part.

The main goals of the project are to:

  1. Help navigate and organise sharing of United Nations media content, text and data on Wikimedia projects.
  2. Improve information on the United Nations, UN agencies and their programmes e.g. World Heritage Sites.


Audiences


Wikimedia Contributors: The UN has over 70 years of knowledge and a huge amount of unique content to share with Wikimedia. This Wikiproject is divided into sections to help navigate the different kinds of knowledge and content the UN produces, including a lot of openly licensed content.

UN staff members: Welcome to Wikiproject United Nations, this is a place where Wikipedia contributors collaborate. There are many collaborations between the UN and Wikipedia, an overview can be found on the Collaborations page. If you'd like to discuss collaborating with Wikipedia please get in touch with John Cummings.

New contributors: Welcome! You have found the place where Wikipedia and the United Nations collaborate. There are many ways to be involved, each section describes ways you can help, including instructions, please start by learning the basics of Wikipedia here, or take part on one of Wikipedia's many photography competitions; Wiki Loves Earth, Wiki Loves Africa and Wiki Loves Monuments.


Collaboration

Many UN agencies and other IGOs are collaborating with Wikimedia, including sharing content under an open license.

UN Media

UN agencies released photos, graphs and other media to Wikimedia, tools are provided to help contributors find and use the content in multiple languages.

Open license text

UN agencies produce publications and other documents under an open license, which can copied into Wikimedia project pages e.g. Wikipedia articles.

UN references

The UN produces publications that can be used as references for Wikimedia projects e.g. Wikipedia articles and also includes citations of other useful publications.

Translation

Translate existing articles and descriptions on Wikimedia project including Wikipedia, Wikivoyage and Wikimedia Commons .

Data

Add UN Data to Wikidata, a free linked database, data from Wikidata is reused by Wikipedia, Google Search and others.

Discuss

Discuss: discuss the project and collaboration with United Nations agencies.

Anyone can participate in this WikiProject. When contributing to Wikimedia project it is very helpful to have an account, to create one please click here.
