Curious re: website

[edit]

Hello Bsherr. I am writing regarding my use of Fordham Law in the Infobox website parameter at Fordham University School of Law that you reverted, stating "should be the URL, not a label (otherwise Template:Official URL would have been used)" and, subsequently, "changing to official URL template (prior edit comment should have said Template:Official website)". As it turns out, I went ahead later and used the Official website template instead of your edit which you also reverted, saying "Typically this is the URL, not a link with label; see, for example Template:Infobox university#Full syntax; as opposed to Official Website used in External Links", but still wondered why I couldn't use Fordham Law and the Official template that activate when tapped and went to that law school's website, specially when "A parameter that is ...not supported by the infobox implementation does not display at all" per editing target. As I had it, in both cases, it was displayed, activated, and apparently supported. I am continually learning, so could you let me know which WP:MOS, or other precept, disallows the use of (a) a label and (b) the Official template? Thanks, Quaerens-veritatem (talk) 03:01, 6 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Typically, the website parameter in the infobox contains the URL, rather than a labeled link. For example, Template:Infobox university#Full syntax shows as an example the parameter using Template:URL, which displays the URL without a label. See also Harvard Law School, Columbia Law School, New York University School of Law, Stanford Law School, and University of Chicago Law School, which all display the URL without a label in the infobox. It is the same with infoboxes for other institutions, for example, White House and United Nations. --Bsherr (talk) 03:11, 6 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Well Usage / Examples has {URL|example.com|optional display text}, so the non-use of a label is due to few using it, not it being against WP:MOS or other precept? Quaerens-veritatem (talk) 03:21, 6 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
As I mentioned in the edit comment, if the use of a label were intended, the documentation would use Template:Official website instead. While Template:URL does have a label parameter, its typical use is to modify the URL displayed to be more concise, not to use a label in place of the URL. I'm not opposed to using Template:Official website instead of the URL, but because it would require a change to most articles using this infobox, it should probably be discussed first at Template talk:Infobox law school. Though I do think it is a little strange for the infobox to read, "Webiste: Official website", or even "Website: [Title of article]". --Bsherr (talk) 11:29, 6 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
