Mohammad Azaz (Bengali: মোহাম্মদ এজাজ) is a Bangladeshi researcher, environmentalist who has been serving as the Administrator of the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) since February 2025. He is the chairman of River and Delta Research Centre.

Early Life and Education

[edit]

Azaz holds an MBA in International Business and a Master's degree in Development Studies from Victoria University, Melbourne. He was the head of the Department of Business Administration at Shanto Mariam University of Creative Technology.[1]

Career

[edit]

In 2014, Azaz founded the River and Delta Research Centre (RDRC), focusing on the conservation of Dhaka’s rivers, canals, and wetlands. His work has been instrumental in promoting equitable access to natural resources and challenging structural injustices in urban planning. [1]

Administrator of DNCC

[edit]

Azaz was appointed as the Administrator of Dhaka North City Corporation on 12 February 2025, following the dismissal of previous mayors and elected representatives by the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.[2][3]

Controversy

[edit]

In May 2025, Al Jazeera journalist Zulkarnain Saer accused Azaz of having links with Hizb ut-Tahrir. He mentioned that a case was filed against him and he was also arrested due to his alleged association with Hizb ut-Tahrir. The DNCC refuted these claims, stating that Azaz had no connection to the incident beyond being the landlord and that he was fully acquitted in subsequent investigations.[4][5][6]
