Assamese news channels and media portals plays a pivotal role in shaping public discourse in Assam, but they have faced significant scrutiny regarding their credibility and reporting practices.

News Live

[edit]

Launched in 2008, it has the highest viewership among all Assamese news channels.[1] It is owned by Pride East Entertainments Pvt Ltd, a Guwahati based media group whose majority stake is owned by Riniki Bhuyan Sarma,[2][3] wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.[4] It has recently acquired a regional digital news platform called Time8. It also owns the Assamese daily Niyomia Barta and the North East Live TV channel.[5]

Being owned by a media group linked to Assam's Chief Minister, it raises concerns about possible political bias in its reporting.[6] One should be cautious when using sources published by the channel and its sister media outlets regarding the politics of Assam and India.

Prag News

[edit]

The channel was officially launched on 4th March 2001, 18 years ago, and is owned by Prag Network (A M Television Private Limited).[7] Dr. Sanjive Narain is the founder and promoter of M/s A.M. Television Private Limited. He is also the director of Nemcare Hospital and the president of the Assam Chamber of Commerce.[8] The news channel "NE News" is also owned by Prag News in partnership with the ITV Network, which owns the channels India News and NewsX.[9]

The channel has many times shared false claims or fake news through their platform.[10] For instance, Prag News once falsely reported that Bandana Kalita, accused in a murder case, demanded pork in custody and stored victims' bodies in a refrigerator. However, Guwahati Police Commissioner Diganta Bora clarified no fridge was found, dismissing the claims with a laugh.[10] On another instance Prag News falsely reported that Assam's mega Bihu celebrations in April 2023 would require entry fees, sparking political backlash. The government clarified entry was free.[11]

Since the channel has frequently shared false claims or fake news on their platform, any statement supported by a Prag News article should not be considered reliable and must be backed by another credible source.

Pratidin Time

[edit]

The channel was officially launched on 25th December 2010 as "News Time Assam" and was initially owned by a Kolkata-based media group, Brand Value Communications Limited,[12] part of the Rose Valley Group of Companies.[13] In 2015, ownership was transferred to the Yash TV Entertainment a part of Pratidin Group, and the channel was rebranded as Pratidin Time.[12] The founder of the Pratidin Group is Jayanta Baruah, and his family owns the Assamese daily Asomiya Pratidin, the weekly tabloid Sadin, and the women's monthly magazine Nandini.[14]

The channel was ordered to cease broadcasting after being found guilty of three violations several years ago: disclosing the identity of a minor domestic abuse victim, broadcasting images of deceased individuals, and airing content deemed derogatory towards women.[12] The Assam government has called out Pratidin Time for misleading information on COVID-19 patients, accusing it of carrying a false report about the state’s first COVID-19 patient.[15]

Dy365

[edit]

The channel was officially launched on 30th October 2008, 11 years ago, and is owned by Brahmaputra Tele Productions Private Limited, with its headquarters in Guwahati, Assam.[16] Mrs. Dipannita Jaiswal serves as the Managing Director of DY 365.[17]

It had previously misreported that 26 Rohingya Muslims were arrested with fake Aadhaar cards in Guwahati. While the group was indeed from Myanmar, they did not belong to the Rohingya community.[18]

News18 Assam North East

[edit]

News18 Assam North East is a 24-hour news channel serving Assam and the Northeast, launched on June 24, 2016. Headquartered in Guwahati, it is owned by Network18, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries led by Mukesh Ambani, which acquired TV18 in 2014.

It once used a three-year-old photo as visuals for an explosion in a mosque in Kabul.[19]
