The University of Aruba (UA) is a public university located in Oranjestad, Aruba. The university was established in 1988 as the University of the Netherlands Antilles and became an autonomous institution in 2010 after the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles. The University is an Erasmus+ partner.
History
[edit]The University of Aruba opened its doors in 1988 during one of the most significant periods in the history of Aruba, when it became an autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Since its inception, the university evolved and became fully independent from the then-University of the Netherlands Antilles after the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles and currently consists of 4 faculties, namely the Faculty of Law, the Financial-Economic Faculty, the Faculty of Hotel and Tourism Management Studies and the Faculty of Arts and Science.
The University is currently housed in the Historical building called "Huize De La Salle"
Admission
[edit]A VWO Diploma is required to immediately be eligible to enter a bachelor program at the university.
A HAVO Diploma is accepted as well but students must pass an Academic Foundation Year in order to be accepted into their desired faculty.
Another possibility exists for students who have neither a VWO/HAVO diploma is by taking the university entrance exam called "colloquium doctum"[2]. passing the entrance exams, immediately grants access to a students desired faculty.
Faculties
[edit]UA provides undergraduate and postgraduate education in four faculties, with each faculty headed by a dean. The faculties the faculties of Law, Hospitality and Tourism Management, Arts and Science and Accounting, Finance and Marketing[3]
Faculty of Law
[edit]The faculty offers both a Bachelor and Master in Aruban Law, with the possibility of completing the Master program in the Netherlands. the Bachelor program can be completed in 3 yrs full time or 4 yrs maximum. The Master's program takes 1 year.
Faculty for Accounting, Finance and Marketing
[edit]The FAFM offers a dynamic four – year full-time two major-minor bachelor programs in Finance & Control, and Marketing & Business. Students have the choice to pursue one of two the majors. The FAFM focuses both on theoretical courses and practical assignments to ensure a solid knowledge base and professional framework
Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management Studies
[edit]FHTMS focuses on conducting applied and scientific research and delivering services that benefit the Aruban hospitality community and tourism industry. The FHTMS consists of undergraduate and graduate programs. The three-year undergraduate program provides students with a scientific, research-based program emphasizing business principles and management theories in hospitality and the international tourism industry. The graduate program offers a business management development program leading to a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree.
Faculty of Arts and Science
[edit]he FAS is set up as a multi-study faculty, with a focus on social-cultural studies and humanities.
The 4-year HBO-Bachelor Social Work and Development (SW&D) program provides students with a professional, research-based undergraduate program that explores the developmental-, theoretical- and practical perspectives of social work. Through the program Social Work and Development, the University contributes to relevant knowledge regarding social, cultural, economic, political and demographic issues in Aruba and in the region. More importantly, the Social Work and Development study program trains competent social work leaders ready to work in a diverse, multi-cultural and multi-lingual society, focused on transformation, empowerment and sustainable developmental social work practices.
The 4 year WO-Bachelor Organization, Governance and Management (OGM) program provides students with a scientific, research-oriented program and represents a joint venture between the academic fields of Organizational Sciences, Governance and Management. The mission of OGM is to study the interaction between social transformations and organizations, in relation to the local context and the public administration. It promotes a multi-perspective and a multi-disciplinary approach that focuses on theories and practices on governance, organizational development, business processes, research and (inter) cultural concepts. The OGM graduate can fulfill professional roles such as policy advisor, organizational advisor, manager, or researcher.
Academics
[edit]The university is accredited by the Aruban Department of Education, and the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders, which grants accreditation to institutions who meet a national system of regulations and quality assurance controls.
Administration
[edit]The University of Aruba is governed by a Board of Trustees[4]. The Board role includes supervision of the university Rector. The Rector is responsible for directing and supervising the daily operations within the University of Aruba. The Rector is the main contact person on matters of education and research and communicates with other centers of knowledge on behalf of the University.
Faculty Council
[edit]Each faculty[5] has its Faculty Council responsible for the education and research of the faculty. The chairperson of the Faculty Council is elected by the full-time academic personnel for the duration of one academic year and holds the title of Dean of the Faculty.
Exam Committee
[edit]Every faculty has an Exam Committee consisting of a minimum of three academic personnel. The Exam Committee is responsible for assuring the quality of exams and determines, among others, the grade lists and whether or not students have successfully passed their exams. A chairperson is elected by the members of the Exam Committee from their midst.
