Tichys Einblick is a ring-wing media platform in Germany, founded in 2014. It was founded by Roland Tichy and is one of the leading right-wing populist "alternative media" outlets in German-speaking countries.
History
[edit]At the beginning of the 2010 years right-wing populist outlets in German-speaking countries gained reach, such as Compact (Germany), Uncut-News (Switzerland), and Wochenblick (Austria). In this time also Tichys-Einblick was founded.
Roland Tichy was before editor-in-chief of Wirtschaftswoche and was fired there.[1] He than founded the onlinemagazine Tichys Einblick. Especially in its early stages, the "liberal-conservative opinion magazine" was likely financed primarily by Tichy himself, who was considered a leading figure in German economically liberal networks for many years. Initially, according to Luis Paulitsch, it was more economically liberal and not yet right-wing radical.[1]
With the rise of the AfD, Tichy increasingly adopted right-wing conservative positions.[2] The authorship of Tichy's Insight also changed as it evolved toward a right-wing "anti-etablishment" stance. Often, authors who stand out with their outrageous theses write for Tichy, such as Bettina Röhl, who compared the Last Generation climate movement with the terror-group RAF.[3]
Tichys Einblick is published as a print magazine since 2016 by Munich-based Finanzen Verlag GmbH, which holds a 12.50% stake in Tichys Einblick GmbH. Finanzen Verlag was acquired by Börsenmedia AG at the end of 2022.
Controversies
[edit]Roland Tichy is particularly committed to freedom of expression and freedom of the press in Germany. In an interview with the Augsburger Allgemeine in October 2019, Claudia Roth of Alliance 90/Greens said: "We must name the people who are providing the key words, all these Neue Rechte platforms whose business model is based on hate speech and false claims – from Roland Tichy and Henryk M. Broder to clearly right-wing radical blogs." Roland Tichy had filed for an injunction against this. The Stuttgart Regional Court has ruled that Roth's comment was an expression of opinion and is therefore legitimate.[4]
Reception
[edit]In the 2010s, the phenomenon of media products that present themselves as alternatives to established traditional media emerged. While previously associated with left-wing projects, more and more "alternative media" from the far right emerged in German-speaking countries.[5]
The “Spiegel” described “Tichys Einblick” in 2017 as a platform for “salon agitators” ("Salonhetzer") who agitate with contempt and hatred against then-Chancellor Merkel.[6]
