Inclusion of stages through Parliament
[edit]Is it possible to add parameters in this template for the various stages that a Bill goes through Parliament (e.g. First Reading)? The template "Infobox Legislation" does include those items like "1st_reading 2nd_reading, 3rd_reading, committee_report". I think it's quite useful information in the infobox. (I don't know how to edit a template or what the correct procedure is.) Seaweed (talk) 13:08, 17 November 2016 (UTC)
- I second this proposal. Yeshivish613 (talk) 15:08, 26 February 2025 (UTC)
Coat of arms - black and white
[edit]
According to Coat of arms of the United Kingdom#Government, the version of the coat of arms displayed in this infobox is not the one actually used on laws of parliament. That's the black-and-white version shown on the right. I was about to change that, but once I opened the template, I found there is a whole series of versions over the years and for the different home countries. Presumably someone would need to track down the correct version for all those combinations, if we are to be historically accurate and relevant? (We also need to add 'class="skin-invert-image"' to make black-and-white versions work in dark mode if they have a transparent background.)-- Beland (talk) 22:50, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Beland: Over fifty different coats of arms may be used, which one is selected depends primarily upon the value in the
|parliament=
parameter, secondarily upon the value in the|year=
parameter. No other parameters affect this. For example,|parliament=Parliament of the United Kingdom
|year=2021
uses c:File:Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom (variant 1, 1952-2022).svg but|parliament=Parliament of the United Kingdom
|year=2022
uses c:File:Coat of arms of the United Kingdom (2022, variant 1).svg. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 16:21, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
Informal name?
[edit]The Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Bill is described by the House of Commons Library as " Known as 'Martyn’s Law' in recognition of the campaign led by the mother of one of the victims of the Manchester Arena bombings", and an infobox has recently been added to the article but I can't see a field in that infobox for this informal name, "Martyn's Law". (And, yes, there's already a redirect from that name.) Could I suggest that this field should be added? And, if so, is there a better name for it than "Informal name"? It would be useful to add a note instructing editors that such a name should only be included if it is sourced to ... well, what criteria of sourcing? Parliament? General RS (eg most UK newspapers with known exceptions)? Any thoughts? PamD 15:13, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
- I think mentioning this other name in the intro is quite sufficient, myself. To add it to the infobox would suggest that it was a legitimate alternative name. The name 'Martyn' appears nowhere in the bill and we shouldn't give the impression that these campaigners' terms are somehow authoritative. Dgp4004 (talk) 18:01, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
- These last three or four years I've noticed a trend in the popular press to refer to some new legislation (both proposed and passed) as "Jane/John's Law" as if it was somehow official. Such legislation was usually introduced to Parliament as a reaction to an event that was given significant press coverage. Maybe the press feel that by using that term, they can claim that they have been able to Right a Great Wrong. Anyway, I don't think that we should do that, unless it's actually in the text of the legislation as passed by Parliament, like the Short Title. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 21:04, 7 March 2025 (UTC)

In the above example, how do we make the link "Text of the Magna Carta (1297)" display instead as "Text of Magna Carta (1297)"? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 16:59, 17 May 2025 (UTC)
