Syntax
{{Malay name|[given name]|[patronymic]|note=on (optional)}}
Usage
This template is a hatnote that can be put at the top of a biographical article to explain to readers that the second element of a Malay name is not the family name but a patronymic name, that is, the given name of the subject's father. (Not all Malays traditionally use patronymics, those living in Thailand have adopted surnames, while others in Indonesia usually have neither component.)
The parameters that the template takes are listed below:
Parameter | Description |
---|---|
[given name] | Replace this term with the person's given or personal name(s). |
[patronymic] | Replace this term with the person's patronymic name, or father's name. |
note | Optional: if "note=on", the following explanatory note is displayed: "The word "bin" or "binti"/"binte" means 'son of' or 'daughter of', respectively." These abbreviations are often used by Malays in Brunei, Malaysia and Singapore. If "note=off" or the "note" parameter is omitted, the explanatory note is not displayed. |
