Baddy, to mean antagonist or villain.
[edit]I am grateful to anyone trying to improve Wikipedia. Someone removed content from this page. Removed the definition of "baddy" to mean "a villain or antagonist in a story or film", due to the word not appearing in the target articles. But I don't think it's necessary for all terms coming in from disambiguation pages and/or redirects to be mentioned at the target page. Many topics could have a large number or alternative terms/words referring to them that also link from disambiguation pages, I'm not sure it is necessary to list all of them at the main article, there could be too many. But I don't agree with banning a one line mention of a word on a disambiguation page. I thought the main point of disambiguation pages was to make it easier for people to find topics that they may have used other words in searching. As a child I understood the concept of a "baddy" in a story or film, but I was completely unfamiliar with the word "antagonist" which is the closest meaning. My thoughts were if a child or perhaps also a person who does not speak English as a first language wishes to look for the topic "antagonist" or villain, they may not know which term to use to search. I cannot see any harm in listing antagonist on the baddy disambiguation page as one line with a link, I thought it was the main point of disambiguation pages. BTW Some time in the past a user, on the goody page, said something along the lines of, they were not familiar with the word goody used to mean "protagonist" and doubted it had this meaning. I added a reference to the OED to show it was used in this way, although I thought may have been a bit unnecessary for a disambiguation page, but it showed it was correct, if anyone doubted it. Also for example, compare to. I get this is not wiktionary, but not everyone who uses wikipedia uses or is aware of wiktionary, it is common for them to interlink anyway. A user may be looking for the article about the concept of villain or antagonist but not be sure of the word. We are only listing one line about the informal term in a disambiguation page, not suggesting the whole main article be renamed. Is the whole point of disambiguation pages not to link alternative terms people may be using to search by??
- goody - The disambiguation page lists "hero and "protagonist" as a possible meanings. But those articles do not mention the word "goody" this definition also appears in the OED
- On the Goody disambiguation page it also lists Confectionary and Candy as possible meanings, those articles also have no mention of the word goody/goodies. This definition also appears in the OED
- I was trying to think of other slang/informal words children or non-native English speaking users may use before they know the "formal" word. Boob and tit are disambiguation pages that list breast, but that article does not mention those slang/informal words words either. In fact Boob page mentions breast as the main meaning, but still the page on breast does not mention boob.
- Also, you me or someone else could simply add the term "baddy" to the antagonist page, with the OED reference. I may do this in the future. I read the links to disambiguation page usage, it would make sense.
If one looks up "baddy" in the Oxford English Dictionary it has only one meaning there.
"baddy (also baddie) noun (pl. -ies) informal a villain or criminal in a book, film, etc."[1]
I think this definition of baddy should be retained - I may add it to the target articles soon. Please discus here if any issues, thanks. Carlwev 23:35, 27 April 2025 (UTC)
- There are rules governing disambiguation pages, per WP:DAB and MOS:DAB, and Wikipedia is not a dictionary. Mentioning other contraventions doesn't make this one correct. The best way to improve Wikipedia is to add these terms to the articles, with citations, and then add them to the DAB list. Also, note, only one blue link per entry. Thanks.
