Confirmation and the use of secondary sources
[edit]I'm posting this to head off any criticism of this article that secondary sources are used to prove the LGBTQ identities of the characters listed on this page. This is similar to what I posted on the List of animated series with LGBTQ characters talk page, but I am posting it here as well. According to WP:YTCOPYRIGHT, specifically the original research section,
All material in Wikipedia articles must be attributable to a reliable published source. This means a reliable published source must exist for it, whether or not it is cited in the article. Sources must support the material clearly and directly: drawing inferences from multiple sources to advance a novel position is prohibited by the NOR policy. Base articles largely on reliable secondary sources. While primary sources are appropriate in some cases, relying on them can be problematic. For more information, see the Primary, secondary, and tertiary sources section of the NOR policy, and the Misuse of primary sources section of the BLP policy.
Furthermore, on WP:NOR, it says:
Wikipedia articles should be based on reliable, published secondary sources and, to a lesser extent, on tertiary sources and primary sources. Secondary or tertiary sources are needed to establish the topic's notability and to avoid novel interpretations of primary sources. All analyses and interpretive or synthetic claims about primary sources must be referenced to a secondary or tertiary source, and must not be an original analysis of the primary-source material by Wikipedia editors.
As such, citing sources like CBR, Collider, Anime News Network, Digital Spy, THEM Anime Reviews, and Den of Geek, along with the many others cited on the main page, are totally acceptable. When it comes to anime, official sites often are limited in the characters they talk about (usually only the protagonists, not the secondary characters for the most part) or give the characters biographies by putting text within images, making translation of the text impossible unless you are fluent in Japanese. This also means that primary sources are NOT necessarily needed to show the LGBTQ identity of any of the characters listed on this page. Such sources are nice, like in the cases of The Owl House, Kipo, Patalliro, Q-Force, Asteroid in Love, and Distant Lands, but they are not always available, especially if the show is an anime or is relatively obscure, and are also not necessary!
I just thought I'd point this out before some editor comes along and tries to remove content here. Historyday01 (talk) 04:19, 2 November 2020 (UTC)
Series with TBA duration/start dates or have not premiered
[edit]These are series we don't know the exact release dates yet, or they have not premiered yet (and have said dates), so they are being moved here until these series have definite character debut and duration dates. Some will be moved to the main page when they have those dates.
Duration | Show title | Character debut date | Characters | Identity | Notes | Country |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
2025?? | The Moon on a Rainy Night | ??? 2025 | Saki Kindaichi | Lesbian | She meets another girl named Kanon Oikawa who bandages her hand, and reunites with her at high school the next day, learning that Kanon is hard of hearing, but reaches out to know Kanon better, resulting in them becoming friends. They later grow closer, while she deals with the romantic feelings she has for Kanon.[1] | Japan |
2027?? | Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars | ??? 2027 | Fluorite | Polyamorous | A fusion of six different gems into one being, with fusion as the physical manifestation of a relationship, which was originally introduced in the Steven Universe episode Off Colors. Previously, the creator of Steven Universe, Rebecca Sugar, confirmed that Fluorite is a representation of a polyamorous relationship and said she was inspired after talking with children at an LGBTQ+ center in Long Beach, California, who wanted a polyamorous character in the show.[2][3][4] | United States |
Emerald | Non-binary | Originally appearing in Steven Universe, in the episode "Lars of the Stars," in this series, Emerald xxx. Previously, Emerald's voice actor, Jinkx Monsoon, told Billboard that she Emerald was "a nonbinary character" and noted she identifies as non-binary as well.[5] | ||||
Sadie Miller | Pansexual or Bisexual | Prior to this series, in Steven Universe, she has a romantic attraction to men and those of other genders, since it was hinted that she had a crush on Lars Barriga,[6] a fellow employee of the Big Donut, who is often a jerk towards her, but occasionally reciprocates her feelings for him.[7] She also is also shown attracted to Stevonnie, an intersex/non-binary character, a fusion of Connie and Steven, as shown in Stevonnie's debut episode. Later, in Steven Universe Future, she begins a relationship with Shep, a non-binary character voiced by Indya Moore.[8] | ||||
TBA | I Want to Love You Till Your Dying Day | TBA | Mimi Kagari | Lesbian | A mysterious girl who met Sheena by chance after returning from the battlefield. Despite her young appearance and carefree mannerisms she is rumored to be the school's secret weapon that can never die. She possess unimaginable power and has no hesitation in killing her enemies. She grows closer to Sheena Totsuki over the course of the series, even as she loves and welcomes death, contrasting with Sheena.[9] | |
Ali Maud | She is usually with her roommate, Lizzy Seiran, and the pair has strong romantic bond.[citation needed] | Japan | ||||
Lizzy Seiran | ||||||
Sheena Totsuki | She is the first student to meet Mimi Kagari and is disturbed by her cheerful disposition despite being covered in blood from the battlefield. She comes to learn more about Mimi once they are assigned as roommates, and slowly they grow closer, despite their different outlooks on their situation within their school.[9] | |||||
TBA | S.A.L.E.M.: The Secret Archive of Legends, Enchantments, and Monsters | TBA | Salem | Non-binary | A non-binary cryptid who begins their journey to find out who they really are after learning they are adopted.[10] In October 2020, Salem was also confirmed as pansexual.[11] Series creator Samantha "Sam" Sawyer described Salem as excitable, willing to learn, and has a "thirst for knowledge."[12] | United States |
Pansexual | ||||||
Oliver | Gay | A wannabe photographer of cryptids and confirmed as a gay character before the series aired.[11] | ||||
Petra | Asexual | A psychic medium terrified of ghosts who was confirmed as an asexual character before the series aired.[11] | ||||
TBA | Lumberjanes | TBA | Jo | Trans woman | This animated adaptation of the comic book series of the same name, features Jo, the first trans female main character ever in an animated series geared towards children.[13][14] | |
Molly | Lesbian or Bisexual | Two other female main characters who identify as either bisexual or lesbian, are Molly and Mal, who both have requited crushes on each other.[15][16] | ||||
Mal | ||||||
TBA | The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn't a Guy at All | ??? 2026 | Aya Oosawa | Bi-curious lesbian | She develops a crush on the clerk of the record store she frequents, thinking it is a boy, even through she, generally, has no romantic interest towards men. She doesn't know that the store clerk is her classmate Mitsuki Koga.[17] As the series goes on, the relationship between Aya and Mitsuki grows, as does their love for music.[18] | Japan |
Mitsuki Koga | Lesbian | A clerk at a local record store, who has a workplace persona different from how she acts at school, since she tries to maintain anonymity during work. She becomes acquainted with Aya, who also enjoys rock music, and even learns how to play the guitar..[17] As the series goes on, they grow closer to one another.[18] | ||||
2027 | Miss Saturne | TBA | Tom | Gay | Tom is a gay teenager and friend of main character Mercy.[19] | France |

I am keeping these here as this will include series after 2025 and these may premiere in 2025 or beyond. Also I have basically zero confidence that S.A.L.E.M.: The Secret Archive of Legends, Enchantments, and Monsters will premiere next year. And as such, I will probably remove it from the above, permanently. Unsure about Egao no Taenai Shokuba Desu, Maebashi Witches, Food for the Soul, Mono, Rock wa Lady no Tashinamideshite, Turkey!, Bad Girl, or Ninja to Koroshiya no Futarigurashi, but they all, will likely, just have subtext.--Historyday01 (talk) 18:39, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
- I would suggest changing Aya's sexuality to "Bi-Curious Lesbian" if the opposite is not proved somewhere in story. Because literally the whole premise is built on the fact that even “not being attracted to men”, she still develops crush on Koga, thinking that that are guy (not to mention the fact that most of the idealized musicans in the manga are male, but this is already speculation). As for the second list of the show, at the moment everything is quite speculative, although Rock Lady clearly parodies Marimite Setting. Solaire the knight (talk) 20:45, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
- That's a good suggestion. I was just pulling from the Wikipedia page for the language there. And you are right that the second list is definitely very speculative. I just kept them there in case they do end up having canon relationships, but I'm highlight doubtful they will. Historyday01 (talk) 22:03, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
Other possible entries, for 2025 section
Duration | Show title | Character debut date | Characters | Identity | Notes | Country |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
2025- | Young Ladies Don't Play Fighting Games | ??? 2025 | Aya Mitsuki | Lesbian | Aya becomes good friends with her fellow student, and idol, Mio Yorue, who is nicknamed Shirayui-sama, is a hardcore gamer girl. Over the process of the series, they grow closer to one another.[20][21] | Japan |
Mio Yorue | Nicknamed Shirayui-sama, she acts like a graceful and beautiful student at Kuromi Girls' Academy, an elite finishing school, but hides she is bad at studying and is an extremely dedicated gamer. She becomes friends with Aya, and over the course of the series she grows romantically closer to her.[21][22] | |||||
2025- | Witch Hat Atelier | ??? 2025 | Atwert | Gay | Galga's lover, who later takes him in as his apprentice after Galga has had his memories erased.[citation needed] | Japan |
Galga | A member of the Knights Moralis, and Atwert's lover. Appearing aloof, he is really a quiet and simple man. He had his mind wiped permanently by Ininia and was about to be exiled by the Wise Ones to a solitary island called Adanlee, whereupon Atwert takes him in as his apprentice to care for him.[citation needed] |

- As I told you, shows with fairly obvious, objective and open examples can be added right away. True, remove the VA quote, if the character is already an open lesbian, then this is excessive. Solaire the knight (talk) 09:11, 22 April 2025 (UTC)
- You have a valid point. In any case, I'm waiting on the source for Kuro, so that I can add them both together to the page. It seems they are pretty open about this, Sadly, the character descriptions on the official website didn't really say anything (sometimes they don't), which didn't help. The whole quote, when translated, from the page I cited, is:
Yuriko is rare in this work (lol) - she's a member of society with common sense... a proper adult woman! I'm a bit concerned that her doting lover Kuro-chan is a kept [wo]man... but she also becomes a good confidant for Satoko and Konoha, so I hope to be able to portray her as a kind, tolerant older sister. Please look forward to the lovey-dovey scenes with Kuro-chan♪ Immerse yourself in the fun, cute, yet slightly dangerous world of "Ninkoro"!
- The entry for Kuro right night to that, however, with a quote from the voice actor, doesn't say anything about Yuriko, however. So, that's why I added in the quote from the VA. Historyday01 (talk) 12:25, 22 April 2025 (UTC)
- I'm just saying that VA's very vague and sympathy magic looking comment is useless when the show and character descriptions outright call them lovers. You don't need additional arguments for things that have already been stated directly in the text. Except for refs, of course. Solaire the knight (talk) 16:26, 22 April 2025 (UTC)
- That's fair. In any case, I'm hoping for more solid references. Historyday01 (talk) 19:43, 22 April 2025 (UTC)

How do we describe transgender and non-binary identities less offensively?
[edit]I heard that "identify as transgender or non-binary" is a microaggression. How do we rewrite descriptions of transgender or non-binary characters to make their identities more valid? 67.140.48.59 (talk) 00:16, 3 May 2024 (UTC)

Splitting off 2020-2024 entries into new article when 2025 begins?
[edit]Hello everyone! I thought I'd bring in something I proposed at Talk:List of animated series with LGBT characters: 2000–2004#Merge proposal, where it was suggested by @Klbrain to keep at the half-decade format. I wrote that it may be time to make a List of animated series with LGBT characters: 2020–2024 page after 2024 comes to a close since "some series could slip in during this month or next month" and noted that "it is over 25,000 words when I put it into LibreOffice." Does everyone else here think that this proposal makes sense? Or should such a split not happen (when 2025 begins) at all? Your thoughts on this would be appreciated.

I have also posted about this on relevant WikiProjects. Historyday01 (talk) 22:18, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
- I think it depends on technical issues. Does this make sense? Solaire the knight (talk) 01:22, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
- Maybe, but can you please explain more what you mean by "technical issues"? Historyday01 (talk) 01:54, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
- I meant that this is a technical issue and if the rules/approach to working on lists requires it, then I'm not against it. Solaire the knight (talk) 14:01, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
- Oh ok. My understanding is that the page would be relatively large, going over the guidance at WP:TOOBIG, and would necessitate a split. Historyday01 (talk) 15:31, 20 November 2024 (UTC)

- For the current page, this would be best implemented by a move of this page to List of animated series with LGBT characters: 2020–2024, which could even be done now. If it is felt that the current page is WP:TOOLONG, I'd recommend trimming the existing content, which largely duplicates the content at the linked articles - some of the summaries seem excessive for a list. Klbrain (talk) 11:13, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
- Hmm, I suppose it could be done now, but my only concern is that some series could be added this month or next month. But, I can agree that the size of the entries is inconsistent and the size of some entries probably should be reduced. Historyday01 (talk) 12:48, 20 November 2024 (UTC)

UPDATE: The split has occurred of 2020-2024 entries to List of animated series with LGBT characters: 2020–2024. I hear what you are saying @Klbrain about a move but... I'd like to keep this page without a move at this time. In any case, Klbrain, thanks, and additional thanks to @Solaire the knight for comments in this discussion earlier this year. I deeply appreciate it! Any further discussion about trimming content or entries should occur on that page, specifically on Talk:List of animated series with LGBT characters: 2020–2024. I would also be willing to change the name of this page to List of animated series with LGBTQ characters: 2020–Present but cannot do that without a page move (that name is currently a redirect).Historyday01 (talk) 22:18, 27 December 2024 (UTC)
Entry for From Bureaucrat to Villainess protagonist... or should it have no entry at all?
[edit]This series centers on Kenzaburo Tondabayashi, a salaryman who wakes up in the body of Grace Auvergne, a villainess. If we use the entry for Hinata Tachibana, in Life with an Ordinary Guy who Reincarnated into a Total Fantasy Knockout, on the List of animated series with LGBT characters: 2020–2024 page, as an example, it could favor giving Kenzaburo Tondabayashi / Grace Auvergne an entry. The Anime Feminist review of episode 1 notes the "trans aspect of the story" and Anime News Network describes (in review of episodes 1-2) Grace as Kenzaburo's "female alter ego." The anime's official website says about Grace, when translated "Currently, her body is controlled by Kenzaburo, who has been reincarnated in another world" and says about Kenzaburo, "He will use the "old man" skills he has developed over the years in society to live a life in another world as an aristocratic young lady."
So, @Solaire_the_knight, as a common commenter on issues like this, does it make sense to make an entry for Kenzaburo / Grace, have no entry... or wait and see? Otherwise I can see possible entries this year for Rock wa Lady no Tashinamideshite and There's No Freaking Way I'll be Your Lover! Unless... at the very minimum. There's a good number of series with subtext so far this year, but not as many with direct representation (which is what should be one this list page and similar pages). Historyday01 (talk) 14:30, 19 January 2025 (UTC)
- I say in advance that this is just my opinion and if you do not agree, you can ask the opinions of other users. So far it sounds very speculative, at the level of a specific reading of the story. This kind of reading of gender bender works is nothing new, remember how much Ranma means in the modern trans community. Plus, as far as I remember the manga adaptation, the father-daughter relationship between the MC and the female lead has always been the main narrative of the story. There is indeed some (subjective) queerbaiting out there, but it has a different context. In general, I would at least wait until the end of the broadcast of the first season and more complete reviews/or any comments from the authors. But of course, you can always describe how this or that publication found it interesting to read the story in this way. Solaire the knight (talk) 15:41, 19 January 2025 (UTC)
- About yuri romance. I think the question is obvious (I don't think you'll have a problem with adding it too early, considering we already know this is a lesbian anime), and as for “Rock wa Lady no Tashinamideshite”, it’s essentially Marimite + K-ON!, so at the moment it’s borderline yuri bait and perhaps we can only wait to see how the story develops. The chapters I read remained typical all-female high school comedy, but the author clearly loves homoerotic metaphors to depict musical moments, so who knows? Solaire the knight (talk) 15:43, 19 January 2025 (UTC)
- That's a fair point. As for Rock wa Lady no Tashinamideshite, I think it's fine waiting to see how the story develops. Historyday01 (talk) 18:08, 19 January 2025 (UTC)
- Update on my last comment. I have made two entries for There's No Freaking Way I'll be Your Lover! Unless..., with this edit and am only waiting on the debut date to be published before I add it to the main page.Historyday01 (talk) 03:45, 23 January 2025 (UTC)
- Regarding open yuri and BL, I already told you that you can add them in advance, since their status is fully confirmed in advance. Although it's strange that you missed the fresh vampire BL this season. The only issue is the request to rewrite the explanatory part for Nakamura's love interest. Because at the moment it looks like speculation that he is gay because a gay man is in love with him. Solaire the knight (talk) 09:32, 23 January 2025 (UTC)
- That's a good point. I was mainly relying on looking at the titles in the upcoming series, so that's probably why I missed the vampire BL, but I know the one you mean. As for the explanatory part for Nakamura's love interest, I took that from the series page, but I'll rewrite that entry. Historyday01 (talk) 12:38, 23 January 2025 (UTC) Update: I have added some of the entries I mentioned above to the main page. I expect that non-anime series will be very light this year in terms of LGBTQ+ representation, but I may be wrong... Historyday01 (talk) 13:12, 23 January 2025 (UTC)
- If you're determined to keep track of all the anime with potential gay content, then don't forget about the new seasons of Iruma and Aharen-san this year. I don't know how far either of them are going to go, but both of them are going to have full-on yuri arcs. Solaire the knight (talk) 21:03, 23 January 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks, I'll definitely keep those in mind. Historyday01 (talk) 01:09, 22 April 2025 (UTC)

Idol PreCure
[edit]As I wrote on the original article's talk page, I've temporarily removed the example and categories on the original page because at this point it seems too vague and pushed only by Western fans/media without any actual confirmation from the showrunners or the show itself. It's best to discuss this separately, as the franchise's known popularity among shippers and potential translation issues (as far as I can see, the episode list of the show in question already goes quite far with this) make this question very tricky. Especially after KiraKira, when Toei was forced to change the open ending to a denial of their relationship due to Western media starting to describe it as fact. Can anyone help resolve this issue? Otherwise, I'd suggest waiting until the show ends, but this is PreCure, so it could be quite long and painful. Solaire the knight (talk) 19:02, 26 June 2025 (UTC)
