Sierra de Agalta National Park is a national park in Honduras. It was established on January 1, 1987, in Olancho Department, and covers an area of 738,29 square kilometres. It has an altitude of between 1,800 and 2,354 metres above sea level.[1]
History
[edit]Established in 1987, the park originally covered approximately 207 km² and expanded to 738.29 km² in 2011. It serves as a significant site for biological research and ecotourism activities, benefiting from 400 km² of forest, making it the largest cloud forest destination in the country.[2]
The park is home to a diverse array of wildlife, including ocelots, tapirs, jaguars, white-tailed deer, small anteatere, agoutis, and various other mammals. Furthermore, it supports a rich variety of amphibians, reptiles, and bird species, contributing to its ecological significance.[2]
The park holds a significant variety of rivers and caves, such as Río Guayape and Río Tinto,[3]
