John Paul Joseph Cadayona (born March 3, 1989), professionally known as Sef Cadayona, is a Filipino actor, comedian, and dancer. He first gained recognition for his appearance in an ice cream commercial. He later joined the fifth season of StarStruck (2009), where he showcased his talent in dancing. He went on to appear in various GMA Network comedy series, such as A1 Ko Sa 'Yo (2016), and became a main cast member of Bubble Gang, one of the longest-running gag shows in the Philippines, before landing the lead role in the prequel series Pepito Manaloto: Ang Unang Kuwento (2021).[1]

Career

[edit]

Cadayona has appeared on television, notably in a commercial for an ice cream brand known for its quirky scenarios involving how to spend a 20-peso bill. Although the advertisement is no longer airing, it gained recognition during its run.[2] In 2009, he joined the fifth season of StarStruck and advanced to the Final Fourteen in November of that year, alongside Steven Silva and Sarah Lahbati, who were ultimately named the Male and Female Ultimate Survivors, respectively.[3][4]

2010–present: Post StarStruck

[edit]

In early 2010, he began his acting career with a recurring role in the comedy series Diva, playing the rival of Mark Herras's character in a dance competition.[5] He also appeared as a guest in several episodes of the now-defunct show I Laugh Sabado, where he showcased his comedic abilities through various roles.[6][7] By mid-2010, he secured his first regular role in the primetime series Ilumina.

In 2011, Cadayona appeared in the sixth episode of the Spooky Nights, where he played the role of a gay character named Vanessa.[8] By mid-2011, he joined the GMA Network's dance series Time of My Life, following the success of Diva.[9] In December 2011, he made his film debut in Shake, Rattle & Roll 13, one of Regal Films’ most successful movie franchises, as part of the 2011 Metro Manila Film Festival.

In 2012, Cadayona appeared in the TV series Alice Bungisngis and Her Wonder Walis as Tomas, one of Esmeralda’s assistants, portrayed by Jean Garcia.[10] He also played a supporting role as Jefferson Teodoro in the weekly teen-oriented series Together Forever.[11] In the last quarter of the year, he was cast as Baldo in the Filipino adaptation of the popular Korean series Coffee Prince.[12]

In the same year, he appeared in four films. From GMA Films, he starred in My Kontrabida Girl and Just One Summer.[13][14] He also took part in two independent films, including Slumber Party, produced by Cinema One, where he played Jonel—a young man aspiring to join a fraternity, whose initiation task involved sneaking into a house.[15] The other film was Gayak, an entry in the New Wave Section of the 2012 Metro Manila Film Festival. In this film, he portrayed a gay character, distinct from his previous comedic gay roles, as the character in Gayak conveyed sorrow and sought sympathy.[16] For his performance, he received the Breakthrough Performance by an Actor award from the Golden Screen Awards for Movies.[17][18]

In early 2013, he portrayed the teenage version of Wally Bayola in Magpakailanman. That same year, Cadayona became a regular cast member of the gag show Bubble Gang, showcasing his comedic talent. In addition to his weekly appearances on Bubble Gang, he also took on the role of the gay character Stefani in Vampire Ang Daddy Ko.[1]

He continued to appear in television series each year, including A1 Ko Sa 'Yo (2016) and Meant To Be (2017). In 2021, he earned his first lead and title role in the prequel series Pepito Manaloto: Ang Unang Kuwento.[19]

Education

[edit]

He was a grade-school graduate of Marist School in Marikina. He finished high school in Divine Light Academy in Las Piñas.

Cadayona sacrificed his studies of Media Arts in San Beda Alabang to join StarStruck.[20]
