"Legend" (1950) is a poem by Australian poet Judith Wright.[1]
It was originally published in The Bulletin on 13 December 1950,[2] and was subsequently reprinted in the author's single-author collections and a number of Australian poetry anthologies.[1]
Synopsis
[edit]The poem tells the tale of an adventurous young boy who sets out one day with a rifle on his shoulder. At first he aims to conquer nature but as his journey progresses his arrogance fades and he becomes to appreciate the world around him. He finally returns home with a rainbow on his shoulder rather than a rifle.
Critical reception
[edit]In her introduction to Wright's Collected Poems (1994), Judith Rodriguez noted that this poem is "a repurposing of old folk-tale tropes – gun, sword, evil-omened blackbird – hints at Wright’s burgeoning interest in myth and legend."[3]
