Description Tolkien's design for the cover of The Two Towers as a separate volume

J. R. R. Tolkien

Date of publication after 1954
Use in article (WP:NFCC#7) The Two Towers
Purpose of use in article (WP:NFCC#8) The image shows the two towers as Minas Morgul and Orthanc, agreeing with Tolkien's note at the end of The Fellowship of the Ring, but conflicting with other statements that he made in letters to his publisher. The illustration shows his design and his intention in 1954, and illuminates the discussion in the article, helping the reader to understand Tolkien's thinking for the volume. Tolkien had not intended to have 3 volumes, having proposed 6 "books". Once the publisher had insisted on 3 volumes, Tolkien chose titles for them but struggled to make sense of "The Two Towers", considering multiple possible interpretations, then coming up with the one illustrated in this cover design, which is entirely different from the cover of the first edition.

Media data and Non-free use rationale
Description This is Tolkien's own original cover design for The Two Towers volume which was originally rejected by the publishers. It shows how Tolkien initially viewed the two towers of the book title. It was later used from 1997 as a cover for a reprint of the book volumes. [Black Mill]

Use in article (WP:NFCC#7) Black Mill, Waxholme
Purpose of use in article (WP:NFCC#8) It is essential evidence of how Tolkien himself saw the two towers and is used to compare to the strikingly similar physical buildings described in the article. Tolkiens own drawing shows features which are directly comparable to features in the physical buildings and the discussion of the published theories that these two physical buildings are more probable candidates of the inspiration for Tolkiens two towers requires the cover cover to be displayed alongside the photos of the buildings so the reader can compare them.
