Summary

Description

A rectangular cast iron manhole cover or drain cover, with the inscription "Fred Verity, Call Lane, Leeds". It is sited on farmland close to Brackenthwaite Lane, Burn Bridge, near Harrogate, North Yorkshire. It is one of the very few Fred Verity manhole covers remaining in situ. At least until the middle of the 20th century, numerous Fred Verity manhole/drain covers were still in situ in the Leeds, West Yorkshire, area, but all or most have now been replaced. (Only the central part of the manhole/drain cover is shown in this picture).

Joshua Marland "Fred" Verity (1847–1897) ran an ironmongery manufacturing and retail business with his brother and business partner Edwin Verity (1844–1909) in Call Lane, Leeds, in the late 19th century. Fred Verity was the son of Charles Verity, mayor of Doncaster, and the uncle of inventor Claude Hamilton Verity.
