re: using ancestry as a resource

[edit]

re: Atlantic306's comment about using ancestry.co.uk as a resource. I understand the point about avoiding user-generated content but in this case the documents I have linked to on Ancestry are scans of the official US Census, Marriage returns etc. which are supplied to Ancestry by the US National Archives. These cannot be edited by users and if the link is followed (though it does require an Ancestry account) you can see scans of the original documents. If it would be better I could remove the Ancestry links and supply the references as basic references? E.g. James McKean's Iowa marriage record could be supplied with a year and volume number. I am not aware of a free-to-use website which hosts this kind of document but supplying the document references as best I can would still allow other users to check the references provided they can access similar archive-hosting websites. You are correct. Atlantic306 is probably unfamliar with the nature of the site, the use of which is outlined under WP:RSP: Ancestry.com is a genealogy site that hosts a database of primary source documents including marriage and census records. Some of these sources may be usable under WP:PRIMARY, but secondary sources, where available, are usually preferred; further, see WP:BLPPRIMARY. Ancestry.com also hosts user-generated content, which is unreliable. While it is never okay to cite the user-generated family trees, it may be okay to cite the original documents as primary sources, though as noted, you should try to supplement or replace these with secondary sources where possible.
While there's no need to remove the links to Ancestry.com, you should also provide the identifying information for the original document (year and volume number, etc.) in the citation, as Ancestry.com is basically acting as a content deliverer here. It's also a good idea to add |url-access=subscription to the citation template. I'm not quite sure myself how the source information provided by Ancestry should be mapped to Wikipedia's citation templates, so I'll ask over at Help talk:Citation Style 1 for further guidance. --Paul_012 (talk) 15:12, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the info, i'll publish it when the citations are finished, imv Atlantic306 (talk) 20:41, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hello and sorry for the delay, I have edited the source citations from ancestry.co.uk to try to give more precise information about what source the documents originated from e.g. Laura McKean's emergency passport application was a US consular document, I have said where it was issued, what year etc. HangingSwordAlley (talk) 11:46, 16 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
