Silicon Island, initially called Island A during earlier stages of planning, is an artificial island in the Strait of Malacca south of Penang Island. It has been undergoing land reclamation works since 1 September 2023,[2][3] and is expected to be completed in 2032.[4]

The island is located in the Malaysian state of Penang.

History

Penang South Islands

[edit]

In order to fund the Penang Transport Master Plan, SRS Consortium, which was awarded the tender for the plan and is a subsidiary of Gamuda Berhad, announced in November 2015 that two man-made islands would be reclaimed south of Penang Island in a project named the South Reclamation Scheme. These islands would be approximately 2,000 and 1,300 acres respectively, with a possible expansion of the project to include a third 800 acre island. The islands would be owned by the government and auctioned off to help fund the transport plan.[5] Local fishermen reacted with protests beginning that year, worried that the project could cost them their livelihoods.[6][7]

By December 2016, more details of the proposed project had been released, and the aforementioned third island had been added to the project. The three islands (tentatively named Island A, Island B, and Island C) would have areas of 930ha, 445ha, and 323ha respectively.[7]
