Early life and education
[edit]Shawyer was born in London, Ontario, and grew up near Georgian Bay, where he began sailing at the age of eight.[8] He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology (1994) and a Bachelor of Engineering Science in Mechanical Engineering (1996) from Western University. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in Ontario.[9]
Business career

[edit]Shawyer joined JMP Solutions in 1996 and became President and CEO in 2001. During his leadership, the company grew from approximately C$8 million to over C$120 million in annual revenue, expanded across North America, and acquired 10 companies. JMP was recognized with multiple industry awards and ranked among Canada’s Top 50 Great Places to Work for six consecutive years.[9] In 2021, the company was acquired by Crestview Partners. Shawyer stepped down from his CEO role in 2022.[10]
Collingwood Capital Partners (2022–present)

The firm supports growth through capital investment and operational mentorship, leveraging Shawyer’s expertise in automation and manufacturing.[10]
Offshore sailing career
[edit]Motivated by the Vendée Globe, Shawyer transitioned to professional offshore racing and launched Canada Ocean Racing in 2022. The team acquired and refitted an IMOCA 60 yacht, EMIRA IV, for global competition.[11] He has competed in several qualifying events for the Vendée Globe, including the Guyader Bermudes 1000 Race, Rolex Fastnet Race, Transat Jacques Vabre, and the New York–Vendée race.[12]
Philanthropy and community involvement
[edit]Shawyer is a longtime member of the Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO), serving as Regional Chair for Canada from 2013 to 2015.[10] He completed a North Pole charity trek in 2014, raising over C$500,000. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he co-authored a children's activity book. He volunteers regularly with local organizations and has donated to educational initiatives, including funding a Controls Lab at Western University’s engineering school.[9]
