Founded in 2001, the firm provides legal counsel to privately held corporations, hedge funds, investment advisers, proprietary trading firms, family offices, and private equity funds. [edit]Ruddy Gregory was founded in 2001[2] by Mark Ruddy and has since expanded to include multiple other attorneys with prior experience in both government and industry, particularly in financial services regulation[3]. The firm has three offices: a headquarters in Washington, D.C. and offices in Denver, Colorado and Coral Gables, Florida. The Colorado office was incorporated in 2016, and the Florida office was incorporated in 2025[4].

[edit]Mark Ruddy
Mark Ruddy, co-founder of the firm, has served as an expert witness in derivatives and brokerage-related litigation and has contributed to industry education through publications and seminars. Prior to becoming a consultant and attorney in private practice, Ruddy worked for the Global Environment Fund, a private equity and venture capital firm. He also served as a compliance examiner with the National Futures Association. He teaches at Catholic University of America's Columbus School of Law in their securities law program, most notably teaching a fall derivatives seminar on securities regulation with Patrick McCarty. He has taught at Catholic University for upwards of fifteen years[5].
Ruddy has served as President of the Alliance of Business Lawyers, an international association of the top business law firms, since 2020[6]. His commentary has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, Reuters, and the New York Post[7][8].
James Gregory
James (Jim) Gregory, co-managing partner of the firm, previously served as General Counsel and was an early equity partner at the Global Environment Fund (GEF), a private equity and venture capital firm focused on sustainable energy and emerging markets. While at GEF, Gregory was an equity partner alongside Jerome Powell, now Chair of the U.S. Federal Reserve[9]. He also holds an AV Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell. Greg Smith
Greg Smith, head of litigation at Ruddy Gregory, is a veteran trial and appellate lawyer who argued and won United States v. Granderson, 511 U.S. 39 (1994), before the U.S. Supreme Court[11]. He has served in the White House Counsel’s Office, tried dozens of jury cases in federal and state courts, and argued over 50 appeals. His practice focuses on complex civil and criminal litigation, including corporate investigations and regulatory enforcement[12]. [edit]Christopher Pilkerton, a former partner at Ruddy Gregory, served as Acting Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration from 2019 to 2020 and currently serves as General Counsel of the U.S. Department of the Treasury. Pilkerton previously worked as an enforcement attorney at the SEC and has held multiple senior roles in the federal government with a focus on financial regulation, compliance, and economic development policy[15].
