The New Mogadishu Development Corporation (Somali: Shirkadda Horumarinta Muqdishada Cusub, Arabic: مؤسسة تنمية مقديشو الجديدة) is a public-private partnership established to drive large-scale infrastructure development projects in Mogadishu, Somalia. It was created as part of a national strategy to modernize the country’s economic and transport infrastructure, attract investment, and stimulate job creation.[1]

Overview

[edit]

The New Mogadishu Development Corporation (NMDC) is a public private partnership entity launched in 2024 to manage and coordinate major infrastructure initiatives in Somalia's capital. Several development projects such as the New Mogadishu International Airport, New Mogadishu Port, and New Mogadishu Industrial Zone share similar names. However, NMDC is not a project itself. It serves as the federal coordinating body overseeing these initiatives in collaboration with government institutions, foreign partners, and private sector investors.[2]

Key projects

[edit]
  • New Mogadishu International Airport, an airport under construction with an estimated budget up to US$1 billion, managed by the New Mogadishu Development Corporation under a public-private partnership model.[4][5][6][7][8]
  • New Mogadishu Maritime Port (NMMP) — An infrastructure project for shipping that aims to add capacity in ports and enhance Somalia's share of regional trade.[9]
  • Special Economic Zone (SEZ) — A planned area aimed at attracting foreign and domestic investment by offering incentives, streamlined regulations, and infrastructure to support industrial and commercial activities.[10]

These projects are anticipated to foster investment, create employment opportunities, and contribute to Somalia’s economic diversification. [11][12][13]

Establishment

[edit]

NMDC was officially launched on December 19, 2024, as part of Somalia’s broader infrastructure development agenda.[14] It operates as a joint venture between public authorities and private stakeholders, ensuring both governmental oversight and private sector efficiency.[10][15][16] Preliminary estimates indicate a combined investment exceeding USD 3 billion for the NMDC’s portfolio.[11] Funding is expected to come from a mix of public authorities, the private sector, and foreign partners in Somalia. According to project statements, future updates will clarify the shareholding structure and operational agreements with contractors and financiers.[12]
