Menya Idi

Menya Idi is a Ugandan lawyer, academic, and political figure. He is the founder of the Civilian Alliance, a political pressure group formed to challenge the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) ahead of Uganda's 2026 general elections.[1]

Early life and education

Menya is a native of Jinja District in eastern Uganda.[2] He holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the International University of Africa in Khartoum, Sudan (2009–2013). Between 2014 and 2015, he studied Turkish at Ankara University, earning a diploma in the Turkish language. He later obtained an academic Turkish diploma from the Istanbul University Language Center in Tophane (2015–2016).

From 2016 to 2019, Menya pursued a Master’s degree in Public Law at Istanbul University, followed by a PhD in International Law at the same institution, completed in 2025. He is also currently studying for a Bachelor's degree in International Relations and Diplomatic Studies at Cavendish University Uganda (2024–present).[3]

Political career

In 2024, Menya Idi launched the Civilian Alliance, a political movement aimed at providing an alternative to President Yoweri Museveni's government. The group aims to promote democratic reforms, good governance, and constitutionalism in Uganda.[4]

Menya declared his intention to contest in the 2026 Ugandan presidential elections under the Civilian Alliance platform.[5]
