Draft:Joseph Parks

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Chief Captain Joseph Parks (Shawnee: Pa-Ka-tas-Ka-Kah, or "You will find him by the side of it"[1]) (born 1797[1] or 1792[2], died 1859[2][3]) was a Shawnee soldier and landowner[1][2] who led the remaining Shawnee in Ohio to their new reservation in Kansas upon their government mandated forced relocation in the 1830's[2].

During the Second Seminole War, the United States government recruited at least two companies of Shawnee warriors to fight the Seminole in Florida.[1][2]. One of these groups included Parks, who was subsequently promoted to captain[1][2]

After the war, Parks returned home to his estate in Kansas, where he died in 1859.[2][3]. Parks was buried in the Shawnee cemetery of Johnson County, Kansas[2][3]
