P., based on a story by Anthikad's son Akhil Sathyan. Development

[edit]

The success of Neru proves that people love to see Mohanlal playing the common man. Similar to our other films, this will also be a relatable tale, but with a new treatment.

Sathyan Anthikad, in a conversation with Suno FM[1]

In early January 2024, during an interview with Suno FM, Sathyan Anthikad disclosed that he had initiated work on his upcoming film, which would mark his reunion with Mohanlal since their last release Ennum Eppozhum (2015).[2] The project, to be produced by Antony Perumbavoor under the banner of Aashirvad Cinemas, would be centred on the life of a common man. Anthikad added that the scripting process was still in its early stages and estimated that it would take approximately four to five months for the project to come to fruition.[1] In May, Justin Prabhakaran was hired to compose the music.[3][4] The film was officially announced under the title Hridayapoorvam on 9 July of that year, serving as the 18th collaboration between the director and the actor.[5]

The cinematography would be managed by Anu Moothedath while K. Rajagopal would oversee the editing.[6] Debutant Sonu T. P., known for the short film Night Call (2022), wrote the screenplay and dialogues, based on a story by the director.[7] However, at the 25th-anniversary celebration of Aashirvad Cinemas held in Kochi in late January 2025, Anthikad officially stated that the story was written by his son, Akhil Sathyan, while his twin brother, Anoop Sathyan, would be serving as the associate director. Hridayapoorvam is the first film in which Anthikad has collaborated with both his sons.[8] In November 2024, the latter half of the script was revised. Regarding Hridayapoorvam, Akhil stated: "The film is set in Pune, with a uniquely emotional storyline that has its focus on humour. Lal [Mohanlal] sir’s role will be unlike anything he has done before."[9] It will also mark Mohanlal’s first film to employ contemporary sync sound technology, which Akhil revealed in his statement:

"I believe Vasthuhara employed sync sound, but that was an older technology. Hridayapoorvam marks the first proper sync sound recording of Mohanlal sir’s voice in more than 30 years. We are all excited about it, as we get to hear his voice captured directly from the set rather than from a dubbing studio."[8]

Casting

[edit]

Mohanlal portrays the character Sandeep Balakrishnan, as announced during the film's pooja ceremony in February 2025.[10] He will sport a beardless look for the film.[11][12] On 3 October 2024, Aishwarya Lekshmi and Sangita Madhavan Nair were officially announced as the lead actresses, by Anthikad.[13][14][15] Sangeeth Prathap, who gained recognition for his role in Premalu (2024), announced his inclusion on 5 November. He plays Jerry, in a full-length role alongside Mohanlal.[16][17] S. P. Charan, son of renowned playback singer S. P. Balasubrahmanyam, was cast in January 2025, marking his debut in Malayalam cinema.[18]

By the end of that month, during the 25th anniversary celebration of Aashirvad Cinemas, Anthikad stated that Malavika Mohanan had replaced Aishwarya Lekshmi as the lead actress.[19][20] Additionally, Siddique, Nishan, Lalu Alex, and Janardhanan were subsequently added to the cast.[6] By early February, rumours surfaced suggesting that Basil Joseph was involved in the film; however, these claims were refuted by Anoop.[12] Sabitha Anand was present during the commencement of filming, thereby confirming her presence in the film.[10] The same month, Odisha native Chandu Naik joined the cast. Naik, who came to Kerala aspiring to act alongside Mohanlal, performs the role of a kitchen boy.[21][22] In April, Babauraj was reported to be part of the cast.[23]

Filming

[edit]
Hridayapoorvam was also shot in Pune, the primary setting of the film.

Filming was originally scheduled to begin in December 2024; however, it was subsequently postponed to 10 February 2025.[24] Principal photography commenced on the rescheduled date in Kochi, following a ceremonial pooja.[25][26] The opening shot featured Siddique and Sabitha Anand.[27] The shooting of scenes featuring Mohanlal started four days later.[8] Malavika joined the sets on the 22nd.[28] The first schedule concluded on 16 March in Thekkady, with scenes filmed in the hills and tea estates.[29][30] The following month, production shifted to Pune for the subsequent phase of shooting, after the completion of the Kerala portions.[31] In addition to Mohanlal and Malavika, Sangita, Sangeeth, and Lalu Alex also participated in this schedule, which spanned a month.[23] Filming wrapped up on 19 May 2025.[32]

Music

[edit]

The music for Hridayapoorvam is composed by Justin Prabhakaran, marking his third venture in Malayalam cinema following Kunjiramayanam (2015) and Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum (2023). The composition of songs began in October 2024.[33][34] The lyrics were written by Manu Manjith.[27]

Release

[edit]

In November 2024, Aashirvad Cinemas announced Mohanlal’s upcoming film line-up, with several releases planned for the following months and into 2025. Among them, Hridayapoorvam is scheduled for release on 28 August 2025.[35]
