Draft:Hillside Cows

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hillside Bovine: An evolutionary trait most commonly found in Herford and Angus cattle, resulting in the left front and rear legs being approximately four to six inches shorter than the right pair of legs in order to provide adequate balance while the cattle is positioned on a hillside. A downside of this trait is the cattle are unable to comfortably live on level pastures or plains. Farmers have overcome this issue by grading their land in order to accommodate the cattle's needs. However, since most pasture land is available in mountainous regions, these cattle have become increasingly popular in sale yards. The trait was first identified around 1802 by Irish European Farmers. They quickly acknowledged the upsides of having comfortable cattle in their area, thus making Hillside Cattle a dominant subspecies within herds in the United Kingdom.
