Hamid Rashid is a leading economist currently serving as Chief of the Global Economic Monitoring Branch at the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA).[1]

Education

Rashid completed his PhD in Economics and Finance from Columbia University, where he studied under Nobel Laureate Joseph Stiglitz. His doctoral research focused on financial disintermediation and macroeconomic policy challenges in developing economies.

Career

Rashid began his professional career in economic policy and international development, holding positions in both governmental and international organizations. He served as Director General for Multilateral Economic Affairs at the Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he worked on economic development in the Least Developed Countries (LDC), market access, debt sustainability and global policy coordination. Later, he joined the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as a Senior Adviser in the Bureau for Development Policy, contributing to strategic policy formulation for developing nations.

Since 2010, Rashid has been with the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), where he currently serves as Chief of the Global Economic Monitoring Branch. In this role, he is the lead author of the UN’s flagship World Economic Situation and Prospects report, which provides annual economic forecasts and policy recommendations for sustainable development. His work includes analyzing global macroeconomic trends, debt sustainability, and the impact of emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, on employment and economic growth.[1][2]

Rashid has collaborated with Nobel Laureate Joseph Stiglitz on research addressing sovereign debt crises and stimulus policy design, regularly publishing their insights in Project Syndicate. His recent research focuses on macroeconomic stabilization, development financing, artificial intelligence, and the role of critical minerals in global supply chains. He frequently contributes to policy discussions through platforms like UN WebTV, the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), UN News, and other international news outlets, providing expert analysis on economic trends and development strategies.[1][3]

Rashid has taught graduate-level courses at Columbia University and the University of Manchester and is also a guest speaker at various national and international conferences.
