Giovanni Soldini (Milan, Italy, May 16, 1966) is an Italian sailor who specializes in solo and crewed ocean sailing[1].

Sailing career

[edit]

Giovanni Soldini was born in Milan on May 16, 1966, and began sailing as a child. At the age of 16, he made his first Atlantic crossing. In 1989, he won the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers, which is the transatlantic regatta for cruising boats.

He made his debut as a solo navigator during the La Baule-Dakar in 1991. He completed two solo circumnavigations of the globe. He placed second in the BOC Challenge (the solo round-the-world sailing race, in stages) 1994-1995[2], in the 40-50 foot class. The boat was the 50-foot Stupefacente - Kodak, built by Soldini within a rehabilitation community for drug addicts[3].

On the night of April 3, 1998, a rogue wave capsized the FILA boat, on which Soldini and his crew were attempting to break the transatlantic crossing record, and Andrea Romanelli, who was the project leader of FILA and was at the helm at that moment, disappeared into the ocean waters. The account of this tragic event is part of the documentary "No more trouble - What's left of a storm[4]" curated by Andrea's son, Tommaso Romanelli.

The subsequent edition of the solo circumnavigations of the globe in the 50-60 foot class, called Around Alone 1998, saw him as the winner aboard Fila. On this occasion, Soldini distinguished himself by rescuing Isabelle Autissier, who capsized in the South Pacific during the third leg of Around Alone[5], from Auckland in New Zealand to Punta del Este in Uruguay, far from possible rescue interventions. Before the boat capsized, Isabelle was leading the overall standings, followed by fellow countryman Marc Thiercelin and Soldini. As soon as he learned of the incident, the solo navigator abandoned the race and, on February 16, 1999, managed to save his friend and competitor, who had been at the mercy of the waves for 24 hours[6]. Giovanni Soldini won that leg amid controversies for not sailing alone[7]. He later also won the next leg, from Punta del Este to Charleston, securing the final victory of the solo round-the-world race[8]. It was the first, and still today the only, victory for an Italian navigator. “I had already won my race and I had won the race that matters most, saving Isabelle. If you are racing and you are two hundred miles from another competitor in trouble, it is your duty to help. I am not a hero.” (Nel Blu. Una storia di vita e di mare, Longanesi, 2000[9])

US SAILING awarded the Arthur B. Hanson Rescue Medal[10] to Giovanni Soldini "for his immediate response, his remarkable seamanship, and his undaunted courage" and, on February 29, 2000, Soldini received the Légion d'honneur[11], the highest honor of the French state, at the Musée national de la Marine in Paris from navigator Gerard d'Aboville, by decision of French President Jacques Chirac[12] for the sea rescue of Isabelle Autissier. Second in the solo transatlantic (OSTAR) in 1992, in 1996 he won the regatta and set a new record in the 50-foot class[13]. Between 2001 and 2005, Soldini was the first Italian to compete in the 60-foot trimaran class ORMA with the multihull first named Fila, then Tim. From 2007 to 2009, on board Telecom, he raced in the new Class 40, taking first place in all the most important regattas he took part in, as well as winning the class world championship in 2009.

Aboard the Vor70 Maserati he set important records[14] such as the Cadiz-San Salvador record (2012) and the New York-San Francisco Gold Route[15] (13,225 miles in 47 days, 42'29"), as well as participating in 2 Transpac Races, finishing 2nd in the monohull class in the 2013 edition. In 2014 he took first place at Cape2Rio[16], also setting a new record in 10 days, 11 hours, 29 minutes, 57 seconds. The following year he participated in the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race[17], finishing the race in 4th position.

In 2016, after a three-year period on the Vor70 Maserati, Giovanni Soldini and his team with Maserati Multi70, return to the multihulls. On board Maserati Multi70, the first flying ocean trimaran, he has set the Hong Kong-London route record in 2018[18] (15,083 actual miles in 36 days, 2 hours, 37 minutes and 12 seconds), the English Channel record in 2021 and the record on the original Fastnet route[19], and he has won numerous victories in the RORC Transatlantic Race, RORC Caribbean 600 and Rolex Middle Sea Race.

In 2022 Soldini transformed Maserati Multi70 into the first full-electric racing boat[20] and collected data on the ocean that is shared with the scientific community for the UNESCO Ocean Decade[21].

In early 2023 with Maserati Multi70 he participated again in the RORC Transatlantic Race[22], winning the race and setting a new speed record in 5 days, 5 hours, 46 minutes, and 26 seconds[23]. In addition to his sporting activities, in 2023 he completed the first round-the-world voyage with a full electric system, sailing in total energy self-sufficiency.

In 2024 he announced his separation from Maserati and a new agreement with Ferrari[24]. As Team Principal, Giovanni Soldini is in charge of the development of a new boat[25] at the forefront of technology and performance[26].
