Eber da Rosa Vázquez (Tacuarembó, July 2, 1956) is a Uruguayan lawyer and politician belonging to the National Party.

Biography

[edit]

He lived until his adolescence in Tacuarembó, in the Punta de Cinco Sauces area of Caraguatá. His parents owned a rural cattle ranch there. He began his primary education at José Pedro Varela School No. 8 in the city of Tacuarembó and his secondary education at the Jesuit-run San Javier School, completing his law school at Ildefonso Pablo Estévez High School No. 1 in the city of Tacuarembó.

Married to María Rosario de León Manzor. He graduated as a lawyer from the Faculty of Law, University of the Republic in 1983. Since then, he has practiced law, in addition to teaching history and sociology.

Elected aedile in his home department for the 1985-1989 term; in 1986, he presided over the Departmental Junta. Elected National Representative in 1989, he held the office from 1990-1995. He served twice as Intendant of the department of Tacuarembó, from 1995-2000 and from 2000-2004. During his first term as mayor, he became close to Jorge Larrañaga, joining the "Grupo de los Intendentes" that would eventually give rise to the National Alliance, and was Larrañaga's most trusted figure. In the 2004 campaign, he was elected senator for the 2005-2010 term.

In the October 2009 elections, he ran as the second-place candidate for the Senate on the National Party's Alianza Nacional ticket, and was again elected Senator of the Republic for the period 2010-2015.

In the 2015 departmental elections, he was once again elected Intendant of Tacuarembó.

After eight years with only a chargé d'affaires, Uruguay once again had an ambassador to Venezuela, after the approval of Da Rosa's pardon. In early 2024, amid protests over opposition leader María Corina Machado's disqualification from participating in that year's presidential elections, the Uruguayan government recalled Ambassador Da Rosa for consultations. Upon his return to Montevideo, he irrevocably resigned from his post.

In 2025, he briefly returned to the intendant's office replacing Wilson Ezquerra, who had to resign in order to be a candidate for re-election.
