Bahram Hajou is a German painter of Kurdish origin. He is a figurative painter[1] known for expressionist portraits and compositions.[2][3][4]

Early Life and Education

[edit]

Hajou was born in Deruna, northern Syria, in 1952. He left Syria at the age of 18 to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Baghdad between 1970 and 1972.[5] He later lived in Prague and in both East and West Berlin.[6] He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf and graduated from the Academy of Art in Münster in 1984.[7]

Artistic Career

[edit]

Hajou’s work is often associated with elements of German Expressionism.[8] His paintings frequently depict symbolic figures and explore themes such as human emotion, solitude, relationships, and existential reflection.[9]

Hajou has described his art as a visual form of communication intended to provoke reflection.[10] In an interview, he explained his approach as “gagging language” in favor of imagery that leaves interpretation open to the viewer.[11] Media commentary has noted that his work avoids overt political content, instead presenting emotional and psychological motifs.[12]

His paintings have been described as prompting introspection and questioning of social structures.[13] Hajou has exhibited internationally, with solo and group exhibitions in Germany and other countries. His work is held in public and private collections, including the Mathaf Museum in Qatar, Deutsche Bank in Germany, and the collection of Sheikh Rashed Al Khalifa in Bahrain.[9] His work has also appeared at international auctions.[14]

In 2024, Hajou presented a solo exhibition titled "Connections" (Vrazki) at the City Art Gallery in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The exhibition featured over 50 works, including paintings, drawings, and mixed media pieces created over three decades.[15][16] Critics noted the emotional depth and philosophical undertones of the works, highlighting the universal themes of human existence that transcend cultural boundaries.[17]

Hajou lives and works in Münster, Germany, where his studio is based at the Hawerkamp cultural center. He also maintains a studio in New York City.[18] His large-format works have been featured in local exhibitions and described by critics as emotionally dense and compositionally complex.[19] Local publications have highlighted his studio as a notable presence in Münster’s contemporary art scene.[20]

In 2014, Hajou received the Henry Matisse Prize from the Château Musée Grimaldi in France.[2][9][18]
