Azrael the Fallen
Azrael the Fallen is an independent action role-playing game (ARPG) created and developed by filmmaker and game developer Jae Taylor, under his studio Eldritch Forge. The game chronicles the mythic fall of the angel Azrael amid a celestial war between Heaven and Hell. Known for his prior work in independent horror cinema under 3 Dollar Films, Taylor transitioned into game development to bring this dark fantasy vision to life.
Gameplay
Azrael the Fallen is a narrative-driven action RPG that emphasizes player choice, consequence, and high-impact combat. Players take control of Azrael, the former Angel of Death, as he traverses devastated realms filled with angels, demons, and mortals. The game features dynamic wing-based combat, exploration of mythic environments, and complex morality-based decisions that affect the storyline and the balance of power between Heaven and Hell.
Plot
The story begins with Hell’s incursion into Heaven, a catastrophic event that forces Azrael to claim the Sword of God—one of the Seven Holy Weapons originally used to cast Lucifer down during the First War. In the game’s lore, God has mysteriously broken Himself into these Seven Weapons and vanished from reality, leaving only His corrupted essence behind.
When Azrael wields the Sword of God, the overwhelming divine power poisons and corrupts him. The energy of the weapon is too great, driving Azrael to strike down both angelic and demonic forces without distinction. Branded a traitor and fallen by the remaining archangels, Azrael is violently cast out of Heaven and plummets into the forgotten realm of Purgatory.
The player must guide Azrael through purgatorial wastelands and shattered celestial realms to uncover the truth behind God’s disappearance, the origins of the Seven Weapons, and ultimately confront the consequences of wielding divine power.
Development
Azrael the Fallen is the debut project of Eldritch Forge, a sole-proprietor development studio founded by Jae Taylor. Drawing on Taylor’s background in horror storytelling from his company 3 Dollar Films, the game incorporates heavy thematic elements of corruption, loss, redemption, and mythological reinterpretation.
Development began as a passion project before expanding into a larger narrative vision. Eldritch Forge was created to unite independent developers and creatives to work on dark, narrative-driven interactive experiences, with Azrael the Fallen as its flagship title.
Legacy and Vision
Though still in development, Azrael the Fallen has garnered attention in indie gaming circles for its ambitious storytelling, unique reinterpretation of angelic myth, and commitment to featuring a powerful Black protagonist within a richly imagined fantasy world. Jae Taylor has expressed hopes that Azrael the Fallen will not just be a game, but the foundation of an ongoing shared universe built by both developers and players under the Eldritch Forge banner.
